South Carolina didn't wait long to bolster its roster after falling in the national championship game to UConn.

The Gamecocks picked up ESPN's No. 1 ranked transfer on Tuesday.

Ta'Niya Latson is coming to South Carolina from Florida State.

Latson led the nation in scoring in 2024-25 for the Seminoles, tallying 25.8 points per game.

I think this increases the importance of getting Wisconsin's Serah Williams to counter this move.

Someone was in the know weeks ago…called in March on “X”…Williams would be a nice addition, regardless….and wouldn’t hurt her Resume
 
Definitely want Williams, but I also think we need a combo guard with experience, can play point and score. Nothing crazy Chen like but a little more scoring when she has to.

After watching KK take apart South Carolina on the offensive and defensive ends during the fourth quarter of the national championship, I'm ready to give her the keys to the car next year. Let her play 30+ minutes a game. Just one person's opinion.

Not to focus too much on semantics, but we already have a counter to this move, and her name is KK. Would definitely welcome more scoring, particularly bigs.

KK is clearly an asset going forward but she doesn't offset Latson's scoring advantage. I cite William's because she is an established scorer as well as filling a need in the front court, giving Jana another year to develop.

Unless there is a transfer or a medically based retirement, we will only have one roster spot available and I think Williams best fits our most pressing need at this point.

"Counter" the move? Geno and Chris don't operate this way. Despite NIL they are not going to stock talent for talent's sake. They will take transfers and pay NIL money but only if the players are "UCONN" type players. There has to be a chemistry component to augment the talent.

Okot would be as close to a perfect fit as there is for a big in South Carolina's system--big, tall, strong, and can rebound her behind off.
 
Why would UConn panic? They will take a player that fits their culture, system, needs, and the last of those is up to the coaches to evaluate. Constantly over recruiting your incoming players with the portal "must get of the year" will provide little continuity and more importantly very little loyalty. There's a reason why most players stay at UConn for four years. Yes, we've had a few good kids transfer out, however they made a decision that was best for them, and I have no ill will towards any of them.

I posted a comment on social media under a picture of Sue and/or Dee, and it said "Family, history, legacy, UConn"

She does not appear to be much. took a quick look at her box score against KY, SC and OK. Lots of fouls, that limited minutes, scored 4 to 6 points, did get ton of rebounds, likely because too aggressive that led to the fouls. She made her stats against real lower level teams. Also not great stats against USC in the NCAA tourney. Never saw her play but sounds like big, but slow.

Since when does it make sense to “counter” a single addition by a single team? Suppose we were to try to add individual players to counter the very best at each position among the top ten teams we expect to play next season. That might take care of some hypothetical one on one matchups, while ignoring pesky little factors like team chemistry, likely opponents in subsequent years, effects on the rest of the current roster…

If you detect a certain vigorous disagreement with the notion of “countering” some other team's roster addition, you are correct.

You seem to be sensitive to the word "counter" for some reason, but for whatever reason, it has been reported that Geno is pursuing Williams and I think you would agree that he wouldn't be interested in her if he hadn't first spoken with Marisa Moseley who, as her former coach and as a long term member of Geno's assistant coaching team, is a perfect source to answer any questions about whether Williams fits the UCONN mold.

Also you seem to be under the impression that UCONN pays NIL fees to its student athletes which suggests that you really don't understand how NIL works.

I hope I have helped your understanding and allayed your fears about Williams potential fit in Storrs.

Well yeah becuase if she comes to UCONN it won't be as a "Counter" move to another school it will be because she may be a good fit for what the UCONN culture is. And If you think the schools have NOTHING to do with NIL you are quite mistaken. You think LSU and TCU (For example) have discussions with a portal player without $$$ being connected to the discussion? They just can't start getting the funds until they are enrolled. I just used a little "shorthand" there to cut to the chase. NIL can come from multiple sources. Some States do allow the provision for schools to directly pay ther athletes.

You hope you have helped my "understanding"? What are you some kind of a self proclaimed guru or something?

I've watched her play and have been able to formulate my opinion based on observation.

She is new at the game. I would imagine she would be another Cardosa when paired with Dawn. We shall see but the Gamecocks would probably love to get her.

I have heard similar speculation. Both South Carolina and USC are clearly in the hunt for a top level big. Williams name comes up for those teams as well. Between three top programs and the top bigs, speculation seem to lean toward Williams to Uconn, Okot to South Carolina, and maybe Cunningham to USC. That still leaves Smith as an option for somebody, but if Williams wound up at one of the other schools, Uconn would have to consider plan B or C

So as much as you hate to see top players go to some of our biggest competitors, if say Okot declared for South Carolina and Cunningham for USC, at least that likely means they are not still in the hunt for Williams. Regardless I fully expect both of those teams to bring in a top flight big and Serah is very likely on their list too, so once one of the top bigs declares the domino effect for the others will become more clear.
 
I don't see South Carolina being interested in Serah Williams. She's a forward, which means that she doesn't address an area of need. She's not a top-flight big (none of these players are--there are no Lauren Betts-type players available for a reason), but she's good enough to bolster a team's bigs rotation.
 
Yep, Serah would not address SC need for a stopper in the middle. We are pretty good at the 4 with Chloe/Dauda/Edwards and Watkins if she comes back next year from the ACL tear. I remember Okot from when we played MSU. I think she would be a good fit. She’s definitely a rim protector. 6’6” is hard to find and she fits the bill.
