  1. Watched it four times, and to my eye, the foul on Karaban 24 seconds into the game existed only in the mind of that ref.
  2. Shooting "pretty well" early on gave us a 13 point lead five and a half minutes in.
  3. As a team, we started this game playing our best ball of the season. In particular, Reed was playing like a man possessed.
  4. The start of the johnnies' run roughly coincided with Mahaney entering the game. Coincidence?
  5. Johnnies take a 1 point lead with 2:18 left in the half. Where did that great play from the first 8 minutes go?
  6. In the first half, it was very evident that McNeeley hadn't played in a month.
  7. Most telling stat at the half... we turned it over 10 times to St John's 2. We did have a 26 to 12 edge in first half rebounds though.
  8. Seemed like the score was 42 all for about 8 minutes. That tie was actually "only" 2:40 but St John's was stuck on 42 for 6:30! How did we not take better advantage of the Johnnies scoring draught?
  9. McNeeley found his shot in the 2nd half. I hoped that would loosen the D on Solo. It didn't.
  10. Reed rebounding strong, but threw three outlet passes to St. Johns guys.
  11. Why was Mahaney in there in the 2nd half? It was literally like we're playing 4 on 5.
  12. Ball Started off on fire. Three 3s and a pair of 2 pointers. But his last bucket was about 12 minutes into the game. Went from automatic to not-a-chance after the TV timeout. Whatever Calimari told his guys to do during the commercial break basically shut Solo down. He did have a couple blocks and dimes in the 2nd half, but couldn't hit a shot.
  13. Reed and McNeeley both had double doubles, and accounted for 60% (26 of 43) of our boards and 48% (30 of 62) of our points.

Liked most of your post but you forgot to mention the great 1st half by Stewie. He was important along with Ball. It should of been mentioned imo.

My ideal lineup is

Diarra
Ball
Karaban
Johnson
McNeeley

Hockey line subsitution:
Nowell for Diarra
Stewart for Ball
Reed for Johnson with some minutes for Singare
Ross/Abraham for Karaban/McNeeley OR we could get funky and roll with Ross and Abraham.

Utilize all of your assets, irrespective of experience.

Might be a good time to drop a few bucks on Johnnies to take the whole thing.

Yeah if you want to lose money. Their offense doesn't carry in post season and they won't get away with that kind of defense in the tournament. The big east sucks this year.
To the contrary, bring Auburn here, or to the Garden, or to Omaha and watch them squirm. Our conference, as always, is a bitch….

They can win 6 straight games with no 3 point shooting? Right.
Issue will be if some balanced team comes out and grabs a big lead. They’re not built to play from behind.

When Mahaney comes in to run the offense it feels like our pace of play goes from 5th to 1st gear. He's that methodical.

Got the wrong Italian coach referenced in the initial post. Calimari is reserved for only one man.

And he played all of 2 minutes in the second half. This season has to be Dan Hurley’s worst coaching and recruiting performance at UConn including the portal for 2024/2025 which simply added to the loss of 4 incredible college players to the NBA. It was a lot to overcome. Between the portal and incoming freshmen coming off of a NC we got exactly 1 player who plays meaningful minutes. Would the real Dan Hurley please stand up. The one who put together the 2 NC teams or the one who put this team together. JMHO

We had a 13 point lead 5 and a half minutes into the game. St John's went ahead minutes later.

Have to say I agree with this. Complete whiff on Mahaney and his in game personnel moves have been mind numbing. Also his stubborn pattern of trying to force his system on players that are not equipped to execute it. Gotta be willing to make some changes along the way when it’s abundantly clear certain things aren’t working.

This is particularly true about the pick, cut, rotate, pass back out offense, they like to run. So complicated, so sophisticated. No Shabbaz, no Kemba, no Newton, no Spencer to create shots where none exist and no time in shot clock for a plan B. Gotta get into their shot as soon as one presents itself.

Need to find a way to dump into Tarris in these spots.

He chose to blame Aidan for Danny taking both Stewie and Solo out after they were lights out.

Solo played 38 of the 40 minutes. He wasn't "taken out" (other than by St. Johns adjustment at the TV timeout that effectively took him out of his game.) His last made three was at 13:20 of the 1st half. From then through the end of the 1st half, he made one layup in three attempts, missed a three pointer, and turned the ball over once.
In the 2nd half, he had 2 dimes (1 each to Samson and Liam) 2 blocks, one turnover and missed all 3 of his 3 pt attempts.
Stewart only played 21 minutes, during which he was 2 of 5 from three, and 1 of 4 from the FT line.

Not sure I would call either lights out. Aiden only played 6 minutes total, and his line in the box sore was 1 dime, 1 missed three & 1 turnover.

And this was Diarra's worst game - 6 TOs to 3 assists is the wrong ratio.

McNeeley back helped a lot, even if it took 15 minutes for him to get his game speed back.

And Tarris played like he should be a starter - another Jekkyl and Hyde game of which 5 plays which role.

God to love Pitino, going out and saying his team stunk and they still kicked our @ss.
