I'm very concerned about ball pressure on our guards
Curbelo and Posh love pick up their defense full court and they will go for the steal when the ball handler least expects it especially on spin dribbles. If UConn limits the turnovers they will win-St. John's just doesn't have enough scoring ability in the half court. They thrive off of making chaos and scoring off of turnovers before the defense is set.

It makes me wonder even more why Mike Anderson doesn't demand the 40 minutes of hell style he is known for.

This is a team that we cannot take lightly, if we show up and play well we will win but if we dont bring our A game and they do, we could absolutely lose this game
very true. SJU played the Providence Friars really tough down to the wire in Providence. They gave Providence a tougher match than UConn did.

This feels like a statement win for us. A close win would be sorta concerning.

No update yet on Mathis playing or not (missed last two games with toe injury).

Also, IF Karaban is out, I could see the Johnnies starting O'mar Stanley (6'8 240, five starts this season at the four) to force UConn into starting two bigs, thus exposing their lack of frontcourt depth.

Also, IF Karaban is out, makes sense for Springs to get minutes in spells, if needed, plus maybe extended run if UConn runs away with it.

St. John’s: 17-12 (5-6 since we’ve last played
Kenpom Rating: 87 (down from 72 compared to last game)

OFFENSE efficiency has dropped from 75th to 129th since the last time we played them

Big East ranks -7th overall
  • 1st in tempo (15.5 seconds/possession)
  • 1st in preventing blocks
  • 3rd in offensive rebounding (30.9%)

DEFENSE efficiency has improved from 70th to 68th since the last time we played

Big East Ranks - 7th overall
  • 3rd in 11.1% steal rate
  • 4th in 49.9 Opp. 2P%
  • 5th in non-Block/Steal turnovers
  • 7th in defensive rebounding rate
  • 7th in A/FGM (57.1%)
  • 8th in block rate
  • 8th in 73.4 Opp FT%
  • 9th in FTA/FGA (31.5%)
  • 10th in 3PA/FGA (38.1%)
  • 10th in 36.9 Opp 3P%

Not surprisingly, Mike Anderson prefers to generate offense through turnovers. While the Johnnies are still forcing steals and turnovers, their rate pales in comparison to previous years, forcing the team to rely more on halfcourt situations.

In the halfcourt, the Johnnies move the ball adequately and attempt field goals inside the arc, but they do not draw contact when attacking the rim, making a good chance that UConn should avoid foul trouble next game.

After a three game hiatus, Andre Curbelo is back, scoring 11 points and snaring five steals in 23 minutes, however shooter Rafael Pinzon is still out for personal reasons.

Pinzon crapped on the coach on Twitter on top of whatever he did originally, so I'm guessing he's out for a while.

Storr was just breaking out when we played them the first time. He's a much bigger part of their team now. Adds at least a little bit of shooting for them.

he did, but I don't think he will be playing ever again in a St. John's uniform let alone playing tomorrow after he openly criticized Mike Anderson on Instagram.

Anderson has a $10M buyout. I don't know if SJU can afford that.
Vitamin water founder is big alum/supporter. It’s probably up to him if he wants to pay

Probably they only pay if they can get a big time hire. And the list of big time hires who would take St. John's highly on their personal list is just Pitino. They probably just need to beat out Georgetown and comfort level of Iona itself.

AJ seems like an obvious transfer target once they can Anderson.
He and Solo would make a good diverse pairing. But he might be young enough to piss off Solo. Solo probably wants to start by soph year. We might need to get a 4th year guy.

I’d show him Hurley playing Alleyne at the 3. Hurley doesn’t mind playing 3 guards. Especially when they’re all big guards. Castle, Ball, Storr is pretty good

3 Keys:
-manage their guards' pressure on the ball and don't commit turnovers
-stop dribble penetration without fouling (killed us the last game)
-box out and prevent offensive rebounds
Hopefully, Coach Hurley will have a plan to address this.
Many posters have stated that we will be so fired up from the prior loss that there is no way we can lose. A little extta motivation is good but not enough to play a style that plays to their strengths and expect to win.

He might get pissed, but we’re losing our starting backcourt this off season, and I doubt Ball expects to start year 1. We can figure out Balls future once he shows us his game, but we can’t turn down quality players to keep freshmen happy.

The other good thing is that since that last SJU game, we have completely retooled our offensive approach and our defensive intensity seems to have returned with a vengeance.

Check out our defensive FTR the last 5 games vs the first Providence game and the SJ L.

Yeah it's just the kind of thing where if there's another good option that's a 4th year guy and this guy, give me the 4th year guy to keep Ball happy and committed. An optimization. If Storr would want to come and he's the best option by a long shot, get it done.

One thing I have noticed in some of the past SJU games is that if Soriano can get rattled by immediate double teams. It usually happens when he gets a pass in the in he post from the wing and the defender on the offensive player on the wing doubles quickly while the other 3 defenders rotate quickly leaving the weak side skip pass open. It almost mirrored the way Sanogo got out of sorts from immediate double teams.

They killed us with their mid-range game. Bunch of crazy leaners went in.

Jackson had a very poor defensive game.
