St. John's Post Game Thread

When the defense continues to overplay your three point line shooters you have to make them pay. You could see them actually being
forced further and further back each time. They obviously haven't practiced against overplay on the three point line. One dimensional and you can't keep "saming" and expect the outcome to change.
Making a team pay for overplaying on the three point line means that you have players who have great court vision and can make quick decisions with ball reversals. We have a few guys with solid court vision but this team is robotic and plodding in the half court. No one is making snap decisions. You also need personnel who can take their man off the dribble in an overplay situation. And I know that you know the only guy who is capable of doing that on the regular is Silas. That’s it. And he is hesitant to do so. The guy could feast at the FT line, just like Tristan did. But for whatever reason, he doesn’t.

Even with the loss to St. John’s , I still believe we can make a deep run. Winning it all is a question mark right now, but this team is still dangerous. Even without a true breakdown guard, we have the talent and toughness to compete with anyone.
The negativity from parts of this fan base is mind-altering. Yes, there are roster gaps and you know Dan Hurley and his staff see them even more clearly than we do. Adjustments will come.
This team proved early in the season it’s one of the best in the country. Right now, it’s about tightening things up. Like a car before a long road trip, we need a tune-up.

SJU only had 8 offensive rebounds. Huskies had 17. So I'm not sure that was a big issue.
When you factor in the shooting percentage disparities it shouldn’t be surprising. Many more missed Husky shots to generate opportunities. But it seemed like SJU converted a very high percentage of their second chance opportunities and at very key moments.

I just got through about half this thread. Some of the takes here are......smh.

Get some sleep and let's regroup about 7:00 tomorrow. I don't think this is a national championship team but they're not as bad as they showed tonight or as bad as some on here are saying. Let's calm down.

Tell me how I'm wrong. Averages 5 more minutes per game as a senior compared to as a freshman (with a much higher usage rate) yet only averages 3 more ppg and every other stat practically the same.

.-.
Braylon over his last 6 games:

10.7ppg, 36.3% FG, 21.4% 3P

It's not like we're playing murderer's row either. He's physically weak and gets targeted on defense by opposing teams (just like Solo). I love his quick trigger, but when he's off he's way off. Airballs, or hitting backboard and missing rim. His turnaround fadeaway J is absolutely a superpower... I wish he would look for that shot more.

He had his pocket picked at the top of the key today due to poor court awareness and a high dribble. He missed a very make-able reverse layup when we desperately needed a bucket. I love the kid and root for him to succeed, but the moment has been too big for him. Barring a gangbusters NCAA tournament, I think he's going to have a really hard decision this offseason. IMHO, he's a lot more likely to have a Liam-type season bouncing between getting DNP-CDs and getting shots up in the G-league. And Liam has a much more NBA-ready body than he does.

SJU is a really bad matchup for him due to their physicality but that's what you can expect night in and night out in the league.
Knueppel was also a much stockier kid coming out. I’m agreeing with you I think Mullins could really benefit from another year. I’m a b bc Eli ever in getting the best draft capital you can to maximize early opportunity in the league and reduce the chance of being sent to the G league.

Fully expected the game to get called (not called) the way it did. StJ has to be able to play with extreme physicality to match up with good teams.

Zuby played a heck of a game. But the fact he was able to basically defend a larger Tarris 1-on-1 for 33 minutes with only 1 foul tells you all you need to know about how the game went.

We’ve payed out multiple millions in NIL to our sharpshooters and they’ve gone 13-58 (22.4%) in our last 3 losses down the homestretch. They collectively need to bring it if we want to make it to (and hopefully through) the 2nd weekend.

I can't say this is the most idiotic post, there are so many. But it at least deserves honorable mention.

Just an observation from a team standpoint Demary does a decent job breaking down defenders and getting into the lane, which really helps the offense. A few times he’s stops short instead of going stronger to the rim could create easier buckets or open looks for teammates on dump offs and kick outs. He also seems to slip and fall, maybe just momentum plays, but staying on his feet helps the team finish possessions stronger.
Silas brings toughness and shot-making that the team really needs. Clean up a few small things and that impact gets even bigger for our run in the tournament.

Hadn't looked at his stats recently, was shooting well over 40% from 3 just a few weeks ago but of course the annual swoon put him below that yet again. I think we can take a guess as to how his tourney will go...

Couple of thoughts on this team:

First, it's been a solid year, but this team didn't seem to develop during the course of the season as well as many other teams did.

Second, I will be shocked if Mullins goes in the first round if he comes out. He's clearly a talent, but there is a lot of development to do, which is apart from his performance last night which was simply dreadful.

Oh, one last thing....the announcers and the visual on TV last night referred to the St. Johns program as a "franchise". Thought that was pretty telling as to where we are in college athletics.
Mullins will need to get more physically strong. He can shoot threes and pullups, turn arounds but even though he is 6-6 he lacks the strength to take it to the rim.

Pitino cheated to win in 2013. We all saw it.
How many championships would vacated in professional sports for cheating vacating championships doesn't do anything, kind of funny that Pitino did get a tatoo of a vacated championship though.

Last night he missed so many opportunities for a floater or midrange jump but instead looked to dump to Reed. I was screaming for him to shoot. 3 assists and 6 TOs from our PGs is in "Why not start Millender?" territory!!

Idk but this isn’t professional sports. I mean, it is now, but it wasn’t before 2021. And yes I hope Slick Rick got a good deal on tattoo removal.

IDK about the Milander thing but I get your frustration.

I don't mean this as an attack, but you've posted 4 times in the past 6 weeks and it's after all 4 losses. You used to post all the time, why do you only show up after losses now?
Mostly because I really haven't enjoyed watching them this year and I've tried to hold my tongue as much as possible.

Oates and Hurley are pretty close I think.

It's just a flawed roster - amongst other things, it's missing a ton of BBIQ. If you look at that 2024 team, they had 4 high level IQ players on the floor, and then a smart role player in Alex. Even if this team is running the "system", it's robotic and lacks instincts and improv. Nothing looks smooth or anticipated.

Even with some players having talent on this team, the IQ is so low - Tarris, Solo, even Demary are not high level IQ athletes. Mullins is a kid and we have him sitting in the primary scorer role. Alex is the same guy, but he's such a complimentary wallflower at times - I honestly don't know why Hurley has been so compelled to run him back twice.

Maybe the non BE refs thing turns into something. If not, this will be two years running where Hurley has basically made the same mistakes with the roster. The only starting spots next year that should be locked are Silas and maybe Reibe. Silas is not a good enough natural PG to play next to Solo, who has zero on ball creating skills. We roll that back out there, it's not going to look much different. Building a roster around Solo creates major limitations.
Solo Ball strikes me as a Tony Robertson type who can put up numbers on a mediocre team, but you're gonna have a hard time reaching an elite level if you're relying on him to be a go-to guy.

There's nobody on the current team who I would demote him from the starting lineup for (though he should sit more in favor of Ross), but looking to next year, this should be a serious consideration.

Funny thing is, no one said any of those things. Someone said it was the least enjoyable Hurley team at UConn, someone else said they wouldn't be surprised if we lost to a 15 seed, and no one said Mullins is not an NBA prospect, they just said they think he needs another year
Wrong. There is one poster in here who used to be a regular good poster who now only posts right after bad losses and has said multiple times they’re definitely losing to the 14/15 seed. Least enjoyable team also makes no sense considering we’ve actually had some cool come from behind wins, great out of conference wins, and are going to be a 2 seed. But sure, go ahead and defend these awful posts, that’s definitely a great use of your time
