St. John's Post Game Thread

This obviously isnt even close to the worst team we've had under Hurley but I think it's the least enjoyable to watch. It's torture. Something is so off about them
I don't mean this as an attack, but you've posted 4 times in the past 6 weeks and it's after all 4 losses. You used to post all the time, why do you only show up after losses now?

Silas plays too many minutes for what he’s expected to do for us, he needs meaningful rest in these types of games. Seems like today was a culmination of him being being run into the ground a bit over the last month and half while Hurley had Mali on a short leash. Hopefully Smith will get back to meaningful minutes and impact in noncon line he was in November

Year 8 and one Big East Championship for the regular season and tournament for a coach that makes winning the ONLY thing that matters.

In a way no other great coach has done ever.

Guy one a championship with defensive athletes and said nah, I want offensive minded shooters from here on out.

Talk about not being aware enough to know why you had your success in the first place.

As @RuffRuff said. Hurley is digging deeper and deeper into the lucky rather than good ditch. How far we go in this tournament can mean A LOT.

UConn is not running its offense, and when UConn devolves to 1-on-1, UConn is just another good, not great, team.

Sounds like Colben Landrew
Landrew is a big body guard, I'm very excited about him as a player but he's not an elite athlete. I've watched a bunch of him. He was apparently offered a scholarship to Bama football as an underclassmen which screams elite athlete but he's not that on the court. Junior County isn't that either, he seems like more of a guy we're going to try and grow into a lead guard down the road but neither of them address our lack of elite athelticm.

Abdou Toure is elite as it gets athletically and he grew up with UConn as his dream school. We didn't prioritize him and that bothers me.

.-.
I guarantee you Braylon gets drafted higher than his stats would validate. Playing in the UConn system helps to those that matter.
Saying Braylon is not going to be a lottery pick because of tonight is insane. The kid has elite talent. My guess is a gm in the lottery will agree.
There's an incredibly high probability he's not an NBA lottery pick and it has nothing to do with tonight. It's considered the best crop of freshman ever and there's at least 15 of them who have produced more than him this season.

I always thought Braylon was a one and done and that was the expectation coming in. He was considered the best three point shooter in this class and his three pointer has failed him down the stretch and he's had over a dozen airballs. We all know he could use a year of building his body up and working on his handle.

If kill to have vital or even the forgotten jalen Adams on this team. Especially in lieu of ball. Jalen knew how to hero ball.

Dude, hero ball vs. Tulane on Sundays at 4pm on ESPN News is different

Oh, and Mullins would be silly to think he’s ready for the NBA.

He’s absolutely no where near ready. And as much as the goofies who want to make it seem like it’s strictly a financial risk management decision. Being ready MATTERS unless you’re okay with getting one contract and fighting for a minimum two way roster spot for our fans to fake like that’s really success.
Becoming a bit more flexible on this idea myself. Liam came in with the shooters pedigree and showed versatility, Mulllins for better or for worse hasn’t has the opportunity/shown to ability to be much more than a shooter. I think snother year would actually vastly benefit him, just not sure what the mindset is on that from him and those around him.

He is too weak to affect an NBA game right now.

This years team is a "Jekyll and Hyde" act and so are the fans. One day people are pumped for regaining a one seed and hours later we suck again. Hurley is clueless and all our players are soft and non athletic. We'll see what the coming NCAA's reveal. I'm just glad to be playing other than in the Big East for a few games.
The reality is we haven't looked like any kind of contender since the beginning of January. It's a historically weak Big East and we had a bunch of uncomfortably close wins against teams we expected to pound coming into it. The St. John's games a few weeks ago was fun because we destroyed them and it gave us a feeling we may have found something but it was fools gold.

Also, an impressive Villanova win away with them at full strength. Then we got back to playing meh against Seton Hall at home.

I guess it needs to be said that they were not similar to this team for one reason.

The 11 and 14 teams had quick, tough, skilled guards. The 26 team doesn't have what Kemba, Shabazz and Boat brought to the court night in and night out.

I don't recall horrible shooting nights those years like we had in multiple games this year and those little guards could create their own shots, drive at will, and shut down opposing offenses with big, highly touted guards.

Dan Hurley is obsessed with size (please, no off color remarks here) and took the Ross brothers the last three years from the same team Marquette recruited this year's freshman of the year. They had to have seen him many times. Is James Hurley's Ryan Gomes or was he not recruited because he was too small? He's at least the size of KW, SN and RB and is quicker, gets by defenders and is more aggressive than any of our guards. We'll know in a year or two, but he looks like someone who would have helped this year's team.

What is happening to Dan - what a weird presser

.-.
Danny has lost touch with what makes a great college hoops team. SJ absolutely outmuscled UConn today.
Too busy having stare-downs and face modeling with officials as if they were personally attacking him. Keep your eyes on the game, your players and opponents. The officials aren't intimidated and you look like an idiot on stage.

The dance is going to everything this year. Hurley does deeper than Pitino w/o the BE refs, he’ll have the last laugh. Hurley gets bumped early and his whole system built for OOC schtick starts going white noise.

I mean part of it is the team construction. We’re streaky because we rely so much on the outside shot and when it’s not falling, we have literally one player that can reliably put the ball on the floor and beat his man. I’m guessing if you got a really candid take from Hurley, he’d admit that he gambled a little too much on jumps in play making ability from a decent chunk of the team. I do not expect he will gamble again this offseason.
Agree. There was a time when there was "no shooting" to an overemphasis on shooting. Have to find the middle. Shoot, defend and take it to the rim.

What is happening to Dan - what a weird presser

Reality is happening. Watch Dan on the game camera. Is he trying to intimidate the officials? He and the AD need a long discussion about refocusing.

Too many shooters? 3-19 from three begs to differ.

You’re caught up in the hype. Mullins can’t hit a shot and shoots airballs every game
When the defense continues to overplay your three point line shooters you have to make them pay. You could see them actually being
forced further and further back each time. They obviously haven't practiced against overplay on the three point line. One dimensional and you can't keep "saming" and expect the outcome to change.

.-.
Disappointing effort.
But, SJ has won 19 out of their last 20 and are a team to be reckoned with.
What is wrong with everyone on this board???? This team just absolutely destroyed St John’s by 32 points about a week ago. That’s 12 more points than we lost by tonight. It was total devastation, domination, UConn embarrassed them. Rick Pitino is a hall of fame coach. And has won every where he has coached. Danny coached his worst game tonight. Our backup point guard didn’t get into the game till about the 10 minute mark in the second half and our starting point guard was exhausted and useless in the second half. Terrible coaching job and Karajan was useless in this game and yet he played almost the entire game. Danny was simply out couched. Silas was exhausted in the second half. Coaching malpractice. He forgot to put in our backup point guard. JMHO. A few coach’s simply have totally out coached him this year. Shaka, Pitino, Seton Hall coach to name a few. And he’s back to being embarrassing with his temper tantrums. We’ll do better in the NCAA TOURNAMENT.

In my mind, Reed is the exception here. I think that he is better than he was last year.

Basically talk about how this team has regressed - Dauster way down on them.

Alright Dan, you media loving genius, here is your stage set tomorrow. Put up or shut up time with no hissy fits.

We destroyed dominated embarrassed, ran St. John’s out of the building a week ago. They can get to the final 4 or lose in the first weekend. Fingers crossed.

.-.
Pathetic performance. Period. The team wasnt competitive tonight at all. Not getting either the BET or regular season BE Title is an epic fail given the expectations.

This team peaked in December. Same issues on both ends (especially offense) has been repeated but no solution. I just think we are limited with our players - everything has to break right for this team to go far against top competition. As far as Danny, easily his worst coaching job in his UConn tenure. Players & the team never developed at all.
We destroyed St John’s by 32 points a week ago. They can beat almost any team in the tournament but not if Dan Hurley resorts to his coaching malpractice style ( stomping his feet and screaming all night. ) he played Silas alll game until the 10 minute mark of the second half and he was exhausted. Our 2 point guards are capable 3 point shooters and they didn’t get much help in getting open and our hall of fame captain was beyond useless in a frenetic fast paced physical game. Yet he played the entire game. Bad coaching just like having an entire week to prepare for the last place team for a chance to share the Big East regular season total and we lost to better coaching and better game planning.

So this one game result says we will play this way, always? We beat them a few weeks back. So what is your prediction of how far SJ will go?
Pitino has won a few nattys and it may be different than history shows. They did lose last year to a good Arkansas team.
UConn is my team - ladies and men - but I will root for the Big East in the tourney.
I hope Villonova and St John’s do win a few games.

Again.

What does he do well?

Average ball handler, below average defender, not a plus-athlete. Not a particularly gifted passer. Physically, he’s more high school than college, let alone NBA - he’s just weak. He can’t get to the rim against decent defenders - guy has taken 25 free throws all season because he avoids contact like grim death.

He needs to come back in the worst way. Pocket a few million here next season and then go
But he made the most of his 25! Very surprised his development actually seemed to regress. I was hoping he was going to continue with his midrange game last night but he didn't.

Yeah, but like Lian before him he is gone. He is still getting drafted in the first round. Probably not a lottery pick though unless UConn goes far and he shoots lights out.
Not sure. The quote from his Dad saying something like I wouldnt be unhappy if he stayed leads me to believe he might stay in college

I remember another hot shooting Indiana schoolboy sniper, from another era. Rick Mount. Granted, short (6-1), but could fill it up. Never made the transition to NBA. What does this mean with Mullins? Probably not much, but Mount did play 4 years, while it's safe to say Mullins won't. As was posted it's an already done deal. Sad, cause he'll probably be another pro flash in the pan.

Rick Mount played college basketball 55 years ago. Me thinks comparing Mullins to him is apples to rhinoceros, no?
