St. John's Post Game Thread

It's simple. If you are built as a shooting team, 3/19 from 3, with 16 turnovers will not beat a decent team. It won't even beat a bad team, like Marquette.

This team will either start hitting shots and will take care of the ball, or they will lose. I actually think the turnovers are more concerning because it allows teams to get out and run and get easy points, versus having to score against our halfcourt defense.

Last night he missed so many opportunities for a floater or midrange jump but instead looked to dump to Reed. I was screaming for him to shoot. 3 assists and 6 TOs from our PGs is in "Why not start Millender?" territory!!
Silas is a talented kid, but looks kinda of disjointed as a primary PG. He never seems to have a "plan", just dribbles with reckless abandon into a wall of defenders or is so downhill he just falls or dribbles the ball away. He's not a floor general, doesn't play with that kind of presence or composure. Really feels like a combo guard w/some PG skills.

We didn’t have the intensity needed to compete. That being said, if St. John’s can play defense like that in the NCAA tourney, they are cutting down the nets. I don’t know that the top teams in the nation have seen a defense and physicality that St. John’s can bring.

It just seems to me that BE games are officiated differently in the Garden and that a team like St. Johns struggles in the NCAA Tournament because of the tighter officiating in the tournament. That was a very physical game with fouls not getting called both ways. That favors St John's significantly. Not writing it would've made a difference in the result. I think we are better constructed for the NCAAs.

Who is our end of the game, ball in the hands player? Our Ray, Rip, Caron, etc player?

.-.
Talk about momentum killers. We were down by 9? AK inbounds to Reibe who quickly gives it back to him, and somehow he's not looking, it bounces off his chest and SJU recovers and scores. And then they steal the next inbounds and convert.

Befuddling that our senior captain makes this type of braindead error. He's praised as a high IQ guy... How can you not expect your center not to return you the ball?
Yes. That is precisely when I thought about canceling the parade.

They are the 2026 version of those Pitt teams in the mid 2000s. Their defense will get exposed in the tournament because the officiating won't allow them to grab and bump like they do.

Wrong. The problem is 2-4 and backup 1.
This is UCONN, you are the starting guard of a UCONN team. You better play like one of the best in the country

He’s not a top 25 maybe top 50 SG in the country right now.

He’s a huge reason this team is not a championship contende

My two cents. Reed telegraphs all his shot. It takes him 20 minutes to back into the basket so he gets double-teamed every time. And he fouls a lot. Both Demary and Smith dribble too much and get caught either under the basket or have nowhere to go. Defense is wildly inconsistent game after game. And somewhere along the way they seemed to have lost confidence and Hurley isn’t getting it back with tough love and technicals. Unfortunately AK and Ball have lost their shot. They have time to rectify all this but not a lot of time.

Agreed, although he did pick them early in the season as his title favorite.

Dauster thinks they lose in the 2nd Round. Was surprised he said that.
I don't think we lose in the second round, but I think it's a lot more likely than the odds imply (26% on prediction markets).

I thought by the middle of the season Silas was starting to get into a nice balance of distributing and knowing when to shoot compared to earlier in the season when I felt he was way too passive and pass first. He seems to be settling back into the passive and non aggressive role once again and that ain't good for their tourney hopes.

I like the analogy to the Pitt teams. The DaJuan Blair team in 2009 comes to mind.

My main concern going into next year is making sure Reibe stays. I heard some later year scuttlebutt his camp wasn't happy about his minutes. That problem gets solved when Reed graduates, but if Reibe were to ever transfer, we'd have a serious hole to fill.

That’s a great comp. How many of us kept picking Pitt in our brackets because of how well they played us, only to watch them flame out every March??

Goodman was pro Uconn all year, had them as his team to win the NC for most of it. Dauster, a Uconn homer, weighs in similarly.
Just like you did with the Big 10 Sleepers guys, you’re not interpreting this correctly

And I’m concerned about Martians invading our planet.

I’m honestly not sure what he expects when he plays with a first team all big east player at a position that’s a zero sum game.

Clingan was a much better player and understood he had to wait his turn.

Pathetic performance. Period. The team wasnt competitive tonight at all. Not getting either the BET or regular season BE Title is an epic fail given the expectations.

This team peaked in December. Same issues on both ends (especially offense) has been repeated but no solution. I just think we are limited with our players - everything has to break right for this team to go far against top competition. As far as Danny, easily his worst coaching job in his UConn tenure. Players & the team never developed at all.
Very well said. Not only did the players and team not develop, they regressed from December to now. I have never seen a Husky team do this to such a degree.

Solo Ball strikes me as a Tony Robertson type who can put up numbers on a mediocre team, but you're gonna have a hard time reaching an elite level if you're relying on him to be a go-to guy.

There's nobody on the current team who I would demote him from the starting lineup for (though he should sit more in favor of Ross), but looking to next year, this should be a serious consideration.
Tony could put the ball on the floor and he had some elevation to his game. Solo is not a good athlete, makes a ton of mental mistakes, take a lot of shots outside the flow of the offense, has all but abandoned his middy game, is one of the weakest perimeter defenders we've had here. He's also somewhat undersized, lacks physicality and avoids contact going to the rim/cannot draw fouls, or finish well. He's also not a great passer.

He's got beautiful form on his jumper - and it kind of stops there. If we are running him back as a starter next year (likely), we won't be in a much different place. If I was Hurley, I'd sell him on being a microwave guy off the bench for 20 minutes/game and find an alternative starter. He could be your Calcaterra. He is what he is at this point. It would be nice to have him her as a lifelong Husky, but Hurley needs to have the balls to not gift wrap him minutes because of loyalty. It's not what winning coaches do these days, they build the best rosers and make cut throat moves. No one is making him a good defender, multi threat headsy player who fills the stat sheet. I've been saying this for 2 years now.

Eh, Sleepers dudes are a bunch of fluff. F68 is much more professional than those goofballs. Goodman had UConn as his NC favorite for a good part of the year, bought into the roster and Hurley. He's only jumped off it 5-6 weeks ago, also thinking they'd figure it out eventually.

Fair enough on Goodman but he’s definitely a troll. Dauster loves us but is hard on us when it’s deserved which is not homer behavior.
