St. John's Post Game Thread

I think that's the larger point. He's a prospect. It's nice to have UConn represented in the NBA, but I'd much prefer a player who's ready for the Big East in my starting 5 while he's here than someone with NBA potential 5 years from now.

This year, we committed a starting position and lots of NIL $ to a player who's very obviously not physically ready for conference play. The same thing happened last year. I think it's fair to review those decisions so that going forward, the same mistakes are not made again.
Are you talking about Mahaney? You make a good point about maximizing your NIL dollars. As fun as it is to watch Mullins develop, for that same money if I could have a guy with a lower NBA ceiling who contributes more this year, I would gladly swap. Here's an interesting question: What freshman 2/3 this year with similar NIL value would you rather have than Mullins? Certainly Keaton Wagler (Illinois) but he was not highly rated. Maybe Brayden Burries (but he was ranked higher and would have cost more than Mullins). So maybe getting a more experienced player would have been a better fit. But wouldn't that be directly recruiting over Solo Ball? Hurley has tried to start them both but not sure it is working. I'm sure that is factoring into Hurley's strategy for next year. The problem is Hurley tends to be loyal to a fault. Even if Ball is not a great fit he will give him every opportunity to make it fit next year.

It is easy to complain, true. My concern is they laid two eggs when something important was on the line. I don’t think the team has the speed, athleticism, or consistency to vie for a NC. Something happened to these guys that went from confident, high execution before 2026 to sputtering, dodging bullets to folding in games that matter.

The playbook on UConn is written. If you have a quality center - extend and defend the arc and let UConn take it inside with hit or miss contested 2s. On O, spread the floor and take UConn inside out like an accordion because they are low twitch players over committing on D.
The team is pretty good. Probably not as good as our past two NC teams. It is unrealistic to expect every Hurley team will match those two. To call Hurley a clown because this team has not lived up to potential is unfair. Tarris Reed has improved. Ross is finally improving as you acknowledged. Alex is Alex. He is not the most athletic so not sure what else you expect him to do? I just think you are being too hard on our coach. There is always room to improve and learn from your mistakes. Hopefully we have another deep run this year but either way, I gladly put my trust in Hurley to figure it out and get us another chip at some point. I think he has as good a chance to do it as any coach in the country. Be patient.

You know it actually doesn't matter if the people on this board "stop trying" or not. Only if the players do
You mean my yelling at the players on the TV is not helping? My wife keeps telling me the same thing. While you are technically correct, we fans believe our cheering (at least at the game) has an effect on how they play. Otherwise no one would bother cheering. This board is perhaps too distant to have any bearing on the fan's overall mentality but it is all part of the Husky universe. A poor attitude and lack of hope here affects others which eventually trickles down to have some residual impact. Even if that is not true at all, there is something unethical about demanding toughness of others but not being willing to display it yourself. Just my opinion I guess.
