St. John's Post Game Thread

Danny Hurley: “Credit St.John’s they got a real physicality, it plays real well in these conference games.” Reporter asks him about the free discrepancy, Danny replies, “Will you pay the fine?”.

Obviously reason why St. John’s lost in the second round as a two seed in the tournament last year. Tonight’s game was another example of not a normal officiated basketball game.

1) Our lack of athleticism was exposed at virtually every spot on the floor. Really, really hope we address this in the portal and get some players who can get downhill. We draw very few fouls b/c we don't have anyone (besides Silas) who actually goes to the basket with any purpose.

2) The bench was awful again. This is the second straight year where our perceived plus depth has actually been highly exaggerated.

3) It's absolute insanity that we struggle to inbound the ball so much.

4) 2nd straight game Mullins came out flying, and then we were unable to get him looks.

5) FTs. Make them.

6) In the preseason, most of us had this game as a potential loss. St. John's is much better than #22, the Pitino factor, MSG, and them rolling. It's not a bad loss at all. Just sucks to see us look passive and soft at times in the face of their pressure and tenacity.
2,4,5 I agree. Silas got down hill all night . As did AK. The inbounds may not look pretty but we very rarely don’t get the ball in.

UConn was right there to win the game tonight but credit St. Johns, they made plays when they needed to and UConn was unable to stop them in critical spots. The Zuby offensive rebound on the missed free throw was the killer play. He is so good and plays so hard. He is certainly a unique player with his ability to put in on the deck, shoot, and play so physically. Not many are like him thankfully. With that being said, St. Johns played a B+ game and UConn played probably a C game and was still there to win it. That's a good thing. When you play as poorly as UConn did but have a chance to win, it tells me how good a team you can be. Some other observations:

I agree with most posters. Solo Ball is a no-show in a lot of big games. Unless and until he commits to putting the ball on the deck, using his three point shot as a weapon to drive aggressively to the basket, he becomes too easy a cover for well coached teams. They defended him on the 3 point line, and he could nothing. He needs to start playing better as the stakes rise.

Reed got absolutely out physicaled, out hustled, and out played by Zuby. He needs to start playing with more physicality and has to be much more tenacious. This was a tough game for Riebe (he will grow from it), but you need Reed to be better (especially on the foul line). 6 rebounds in 35 minutes is a joke for someone his size.

UConn has to work on press break. They can't rely on Demery going 36 minutes and being forced to be the primary ball handler the entire time. You can play he and Smith together, use Mullins more, whatever, but Hurley has to figure out better press break strategy. Demery was gassed at the end of the game, as he went 36+ minutes. You gotta get him more of a blow in game like this.

One thing on Hurley. He is a great coach. I love that he is here, and think the world of him. With that being said, he has to consider working on some form of a zone for teams like St. Johns who are physically more gifted than UConn. It's just a fact. They aren't a great shooting team, so zoning them at least for parts of the game can disrupt their flow and perhaps keep them off the foul line. I disagree strongly with several posters who point the finger only at UConn. Many times, St. Johns played similarly defensively with their hands and were overtly physical and no call was made. Yes UConn fouls, but so does St. Johns yet they are given a longer leash by the officials. Just my thought. As I have said consistently, I still think this is a Final 4/National Championship contender and nothing tonight diminished that feeling.

Everyone needs to come out aggressive on the team. It was clear from the get go that SJU was gonna try and bully UConn and you can’t be passive with a bully you gotta come back and punch them right in the mouth. Too much passive play on defense on the boards and on offense. Silas and Alex figured it out the rest of the guy not so much.

20+ games in, so I don’t see consistent progress on any of those 6. Might need a favorable draw in the tournament to make a deep run

Really good night for the BE. SJ becomes another high end scalp for the rest of the conference. A 20-0 UConn would’ve been fun for us. But I’m sure the rest of the league is ecstatic.

Yeah? And you can’t win it from the 2 or 3 slot? 1 seeds get bumped off all the time as do 2’s and 3’s. That difference means little, it’s how we are playing at that time.
Exactly. I want the 1 seed , but I am more concerned about UConn just playing well and addressing their weaknesses. As many have pointed out here, the FT shooting is a real problem and I am so sick of it.

FWIW, Malachi was excellent in the second Providence game on 1/27
I mispoke. It was the PC game he shot well from 3. But even in that game I didn't think he was great. But if we could get that from Smith regularly, I would take it gladly. I have no confidence he can repeat that. His size and skill set just don't add up.

That dunk was awesome! Loved it! If it wasn't for the TO's and missed FT, it might have been Demary's best game yet. As it was, it was a mixed bag.
Ha with 9 turnovers and 3 consecutive missed FT, that’s one of the biggest “if” statements ever. Not hating on Silas, just thought it was funny

Defense lost this game, and Silas has got to be more aggressive from the jump, he's our best player. Also, I was disappointed that Dan Hurley opted to close with Solo instead of JRoss when we were making a run with JRoss in the game.
We must of watched a different game. JRoss played very well for his 5-6 minutes in the first half. He only played 2-3 minutes in the second half and gave away a dunk because of a lazy pass out front in that time and didn’t do much else

I don’t recall. But for arguments sake, okay twice. That wasn’t a real issue tonight.
It wasn't the only issue, but it hurt our comeback chances late. There were 3 or 4 other near TO's on inbound plays. When you play with fire, eventually you are going to get burned.

Smith has trouble with the very physical teams. I think he will be a plus in the tournament when it’s not as physical
Smith has trouble just running simple offense. He is not much of a passer and dribbles too much and then when the plays break down he tries to make a big shot and pass and it ends up horrible.

Nears only count in horse shoes. Call me when it’s an actual issue.

I watched a ton of his games at Dayton the last few seasons - he isn't very well suited for physical games like tonight's but he has a consistently good handle and is fearless. I'm much more confident with him as the backup point guard for the tournament than if it were Adams, who has more turnovers than assists for a brutal Maryland team this season

Yeah, like if I were a foot taller and had a jump shot I might have played for UConn. Well, probably not.

Huh? Rick was at Iona in 23, who we destroyed in the tournament then I’m pretty sure we went 3-0 against them in 24
Yea. But Iona was winning at half with 2 NBA Guards. Developed Daniss Jenkins and Walter Clayton. Live and die with UConn women and men and do not like Pitino but love his passion for basketball
