Linear Rotations:
Cumulative Unique Rotations Sorted By Plus/Minus.
  • For more analytics, see CBB Analytics free tier for access to UConn’s rotations analytics (including advanced ones normally available only on an entire game basis).
  • Alternatively, see Hoop Explorer.
&1 More and better quality Mix-and-Match at a faster PACE is part of Geno and CD’s solution to the riddle of a deep quality roster.
  • One enables the other (and vice versa) and results in faster and better learning and improvement (akin to machine learning) and flatter minutes to achieve program and individual goals;
  • And the more dominant mix-match play is, the more time can be carved out of games for training the lower bench players.

Rotation Stint Index Series.
  • Per Bonedog’s Inquiry.
  • The Index (Per 40 Plus/ Minus) is based on the most recent games as of a certain date: 3 Quad 1 games, 3 Quad 2 games and 4 Quad 3/4 games.
  • Similar to other Indexes (DJIA, CPI) methodology but different; For example, not all Quad 1 games are the same, not all players are available and Geno and CD have different targeted objectives in the “metamorphosis” period.

I thought 6 was a distinctive group when they came out. KK Allie Blanca Sarah Serah. It’s a big group, and Azzi wasn’t in it. No Ash either. Allie played a role more like what we’ll see from her next year. Geno gave them a little more than two minutes and they were +7.

You classified it as a pocket bridge rotation, which seems right in the context of this season. But substitute Olivia Vukosa for Serah and it may also be a forecast of a winning time rotation next season.

Thanks to you, I’m much more attuned to this sort of thing.

Thanks. This was an enlightening exercise for me as well as I have gained some idea as to the observable component of Geno and CD’s secret sauce, especially in this paradigm shift that involves deep high quality rosters.

As you have noted, stratifying rotations by spurtability gives a lot of insights into Geno and CD’s development of players into “plug and play” “basketball players” that win championships and become professionals practicing a “craft”.
  • “Fast-paced” “mix-match” minutes is truly a precious resource in a deep quality roster, that allow Geno and CD to meet multiple objectives in their unicorn program.
  • As Shea attests, Geno and CD are masters at nurturing players’ nature in bringing out the best (basketball) versions of themselves.
The +/- stat may strike some as being overly simplistic, but with enough data, it does speak to the growth of players into “plug and play” “basketball players”.
  • One can see the growth over several games of Kayleigh, Allie, Blanca, and Jana.
  • Even players who have been in the program for some time, such as Caroline or Ayanna, can, in a pinch, provide pocket breather minutes because they work well in their rotations (any scoring is plus).
  • The Per 40 +/- is like a less-data intense Net Efficiency stat that can give some good insights.
I guess, one could append a skills inventory or more stats to every rotation to explain how each rotation is a formidably unique weapon that opponents have to prepare for.
  • That would be overkill and would unnecessarily induce stats coma.
  • But doing that calculus in your head, one can see why an addition like Sarah Okeke can be a very welcome addition (rotation stint minutes are between 2 and 3 minutes, posts can only be best effective in short stints, and imagine a taller Blanca or a more physical Serah).
  • Geno and CD do give players a very tangible, straightforward and very effective way to improve in their “fast-paced” “mix-match” which seems to be the fullest expression of their beautiful basketball.
As for next year’s Winning Time Rotations:
  • Imagine a Top 10/11 instead of a Top 8: with Azzi leaving — the Top 7 returning with offseason improvements, with Jovana, Olivia, Morgan and (hopefully) Sarah Okeke;
  • I waited to see early iterations of Geno and CD’s rotations and their performance before stipulating this season’s Winning Time Rotations formula (Azzi+Sarah + 3 others in Top 8); Note that they have used 19 of the possible 20 combinations (they haven’t played Azzi, Allie, Ash, Blanca, Sarah together);
  • My early guess of one prong of next year’s Winning Time Rotations is (Blanca+Sarah) + 3 others in the Top 10/11; another prong would be 3 of a Top 5 (Blanca, Sarah, Jovana, Olivia, (hopefully) Sarah Okeke) + 2 others in the Top 10/11.
  • A lot of characteristics of this year’s team are transferable to next year (including the vaunted defense).

I’m not at all sanguine about Okeke coming next season. But I think Olivia may be able replace what Geno’s gotten from Serah by next February. She a heady player.

I also think I see what you’re picturing, that Sarah and Blanca will be the new core of most winning time rotations with Ash Allie Morgan (fingers crossed) Jana and Olivia mixed in with Kayleigh and KK (and maybe Kelis and Jovana) to fill out the many possible variations. One lesson I’ve learned from your thought experiment is that the more variations, the more challenging the team is to prepare for.

It isn’t clear how much playing time Kelis and Jovana will see. It could be a very variable quantity.

.-.
There has been evidence all along of the vaunted “metamorphosis”.
  • evidence comes in the same effort of verifying Blanca’s recent assertion &1 in an interview about the Big East;
  • evidence comes in the Cumulative Page and the Player Minutes Page which were redone to filter-in only Big East games and only OOC games.
In the OOC games, only the Winning Time Rotations were really winning games;
  • the other rotation stint types were barely cutting it (see Per 40 +/- here and here);
  • this dramatically changed in Big East games (see Per 40 +/- here and here);
  • the dramatic change signifies that every player has grown and no longer overly reliant on being propped up by Azzi and Sarah, two of the five best players in NCAA D1;
  • individual players blossomed and chemistry blossomed;
  • The Top 8 players have become “plug and play” “basketball players” (their Per 40 +/- are in a narrow band) over the course of the Big East schedule.
&1 Blanca’s assertion about the Big East during her interview:
  • Q: So far the only real challenge you have had against Tennessee. Do you think it's a limit in your preparation to have very simple conference matches?
  • A: Actually no. The drawn games help you prepare for difficult times, while the quieter ones allow you to work on details and improve. Everything is needed to grow as a team.

The BE table is revealing for where Geno seems to be heading. The top four rotations in minutes are also tops in +/-. And of course the top two are just mix/match-variations of the starting lineup with Serah and Blanca toggling for each other. Even with that small number, adding Kayleigh and Allie into the mix is sufficient to give great variety while maintaining enough playing time to create good chemistry in a kaleidoscope of different looks.
