We all know about Hurley's game rituals. Underwear, sage, holy water etc.

What are some other examples of crazy athlete superstitions?

Mark Grace had an infamous one for sure.

Chris Jackson / Abdul Rauf had some crazy ones. I think he had to tie his shoelaces without them touching until the end, and had to hit a bunch of consecutive perfect swishes. Tourette’s sounds like a PIA.

I have some game day watching traditions with my football team, but I’ve been getting kicked in the proverbial nuts every year so maybe it’s time to change it up.

Yes. At home but the wife puts up with. I put it on right before tipoff and take it off at the end.
I also hope y have a hermetically sealed compartment or keep it in the garage😀

Here’s to hoping it gets really ripe and doesn’t get washed until next season

Key Superstitions and Beliefs in Bull Durham:
  • "Respect the Streak": Crash Davis emphasizes that a player on a streak must respect it, meaning they should not change anything in their routine, as the streak provides positive energy.
  • The Church of Baseball: Annie Savoy posits that baseball is a religion with no guilt, and she specifically targets players who need to break out of a slump, believing her involvement guarantees their best career year.
  • Rituals and Gear: Players are implied to have specific, superstitious routines regarding their equipment, as suggested by the focus on not changing habits or gear during winning streaks.
  • Numerical Significance: Annie notes that there are 108 stitches in a baseball, connecting it to the 108 beads in a Catholic rosary, blending spiritual belief with the game.
  • Focus on the Present: The film suggests that while life requires dealing with guilt, baseball allows players to let go and simply exist in the moment.

I heard a story about Lefty Gomez. Yankee Hall of Famer. Used to come off the mound and put his glove in exactly the same place on the bench with a ball inside. One time one of his teammates got tired of watching the ritual so he grabbed the glove, tossed on the ground and kicked it around. Of course the pitcher was furious. When they went out in the next inning he put down the side in order, striking out 2 and after going 3-0 on the 3rd got him to pop it up. In the dugout after the player say, “ See, it didn’t hurt that I threw your glove around.” Lefty looks at him and say, “ If you just left it alone I’d have got them in 3 pitches!”
