Duke First, Florida Last Among No. 1 Seeds in Basketball Spending

Interesting look at who spends what and where there seeds are.

And it will never not be funny when a 1-6 mil team upsets a 10 or even 15+ team, minus UConn of course.

I'd venture a guess that purdue was 10x fdu, lol!

One of the positives I'm seeing right now is coaches of SEC & B10 schools interested in the Nova job - tells me despite some of the perceived conference disparities on economics, top programs invest no matter where they are. Generally a fairly level playing field across name brands outside of Duke & Kentucky.

If Marquette is outspending us, what for? It's not players. Are they flying first class? Where is that money going?

Also tells me Golden may be on the market at some point.

This is just for salaries and other expenses as I understood it and does not include NIL since it's for 2023.
If that's not correct, please cite what's included.
Golden wasn't at Florida two years ago. If that's how small their budget was no wonder Mike White left for Georgia.

For 24/25, Arkansas would be at the top of the list for spending

Squid's survival depends upon it

And MI spends as much (or little) as Yale? Firgetaboutit

Public budgets don’t typically include the money provided by private booster groups/clubs/foundations. Portions of the high salaries of coaches come from this source. And, as so many point out, NIL money isn’t included either. I don’t think many accurate inferences can be made from this data set even if it were current,

Xavier (allegedly) outspending North Carolina is interesting.

Just remember that these spending numbers for each school aren't all the same. You'd really have to dig into the numbers to see where money is spent. For example, Marquette plays their home games at Fiserv Forum where I'm assuming they pay rent. UNC plays their home games at the Dean Dome that they own. Is there any "rent" number in their spending?

I have a working theory on this: I expect the Big East to be better than both the Big 12 and ACC going forward. It already started this year: the Big East got a higher percentage of teams in than both the Big 12 and ACC. With P4 schools devoting 15 million out of their 20 million in NIL to football, that only leaves 5 million for basketball. The Big East schools will likely budget 5+ million for basketball which will keep the league competitive.

This chart is worthless. Unless you believe our 22-23 budget, without any player NIL amounts or updated coaching salaries has an impact on this season’s seeding.

Yeah, this data should be put up against the 2023 field seedings and results. UK and Duke paid tons that year and walked away with matching second round losses IIRC.

These kinds of things are really stupid because we have seen countless times in all sports it’s really not how much you spend it’s how you spend it.

I guess one theory could be that the B12 and ACC will spend more on football to keep up with the SEC and B10, neglecting hoops.
