South Dakota State Postgame Thread

I was miffed as to why down the stretch they tried to get her the ball but thought maybe Geno was trying to boost her confidence some but it’s March, not November.
More reason to try that when the game is well under control. Considering who was in the game at the time, that made sense. How is it that her teammates can get Sarah the ball so easily but can't get the ball to Jana in a position for her to score?

How many times did Jana get a high pass into the post? Those bounce passes are hard for any tall player to grasp when shorter players can get their hands on them. Get the ball high to a 6'5" player. She missed a close in shot but that happens to all players. If Jana averaged at least seven shots a game, I believe she would make at least three of them. She gets too much blame for mistakes her teammates make. imo
Midway through the 4th, Sarah passed Jana the ball up high and close in, literally about three feet from the rim. Jana caught it cleanly and -- brought it down to her waist and a Jacks guard stripped her.

My opinion, Sarah knows how to effectively use her body to fend off the defender, Jana still needs to learn how to use that frame, spread out to make it more difficult for the defender.

ND's roster is good but not even close to ours based on experience and talent.
ND has 3 players who will be drafted and play in the W this summer..Westbeld,Miles and Citron..you add in Koval and Karlin to back up Westbeld in the post and King who is a rebounding machine and top off all that with Hildago who Uconn hasn't come close to stopping the last 2 years and I'd say they are pretty formidable
I hope Uconn has a chance to play them again because that would mean ND knocked out Texas and SC and would play Uconn for the championship

Right now UConn is scheduled for a 5:30 start in the sweet 16. Since JuJu will not be available, I'm wondering if our game will be moved to the 8:00 time. Prime time was for JuJu, so with her out it would make since to switch times. We all know how terrible this is, so I wish JuJu the best and hope she takes her time with her rehab. No reason to rush, she won't be able to play next year anyway.

Since Caroline has already announced her intention to return to Storrs next season, there was no urgent need to give her an applause opportunity during the game. Taking care of Paige and making sure that Aubrey had minutes (to get her primed for the next few games and to showcase her for WNBA scouts) were higher priorities.

It's also possible that Caroline was "under the weather" for some reason, but more likely it's just that she was at the bottom of the priority list last night.
Yes and no. UConn won by 34 pts and were up over 40+. There were 12 players suited up and only Caroline did not play. I doubt it was about being “at the bottom of the priority list.”

Don’t want to rain on any parade, but SDSU managed to expose a weakness in the small lineup. Paige was forced to defend against bigger post players once Jana left the game, and they were able to take advantage of it. Geno responded initially by putting Ice in the game, which is not entirely satisfactory. SDSU did this with only a pair of 6’2” players. Rebecca even commented on it at the time.

Adjustments were made and the small lineup was able to run away with the game. But this is worth keeping an eye on. I’m sure Geno is thinking hard about how to manage OU’s big guards/small forwards with this in mind. Payton Verhulst in particular comes to mind. The easy solution to this problem is Aubrey who is an obvious asset for any small lineup. Caroline could also seal this gap, if she’s feeling up to it. I wonder if this means we could see a lot more of Aubrey and maybe Caroline next week.
nice observation and I agree. But at this point we are who we are. Geno and staff know that there will need to be multiple substitutions where the small line up will give way on the defensive side, but will make up for it on the offensive end. The chess match will be when during these games Geno decides to go big or small. The big lineup will need to at least not be detriment to the team when in the game so we aren't forced into a small line too often. Geno seems to be using Aubrey in several minute situations during the game. so I'm not sure if she's able to carry the load that Geno wishes she could because she would certainly be real mitigating factor. The more realistic hope is for Ice and Jana collectively to improve their play incrementally for the rest of the tournament. I think Ice has shown more confidence, but Jana is struggling and we really need her to provide more (similar to what she did at SC).

Many passes to Jana are bounce through traffic, somewhat forced it seems. Jana may also not offer the most mobile target to receive many passes. This is an area of future development.

With all of the injuries last year, Paige was often forced to defend post players. She rose to that challenge with a career high in blocked shots. Perhaps that is something she'll be working on this week in practice.

Especially since Paige, as with all of the UConn players, will be checking the BY to see what they need to work on in practice. :)

The "small lineup" has the the downside of being smaller, you say?

The upside is being quicker on defense and forcing the opposition to guard the smaller lineup.

Was also hopeful Ice’s jump shot was an indication for more positive contributions, then she went into one of her funks with chippy fouls, seemingly in the wrong place at the wrong time, lazy passes. We’ll need her in the next round (or more?) to give us a more consistent contribution.
It just seems to me that it is like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole with her. She is willing to play the five spot because it gets her on the floor but playing wing is where she prefers and probably has the best chance to play at the next level.

Plus, the guards could be a lot better in feeding the posts. They often get the ball where they are in awkward positions to score.

I realized this watching Kansas State play. Sendell feeding Lee was clinic on how the post should get passes.

The Jackrabbits provided a good test and the first quarter was a reminder that if the Huskies don't play well somebody can take the game away from them. If they can maintain this level of play against Oklahoma their margin of victory will most likely not be 30+ points, but they should win the game.

It’s great to try to get Jana a basket, but she was well-defended. It doesn’t help Jana or the team to have 3-5 turnovers forcing the ball in to a player who’s not open.
Should I be concerned that Caroline remained on the bench at the end?

You nailed it -'the big lineup will need at least not to be a detriment', as most all teams we will now be playing will have bigs superior to ours but we still want to be b able to match up with them at times

H.C. Aaron Johnston also reflected on a question about UCONN quality of play:
"They play HARD. They don't take breaks." ( at about the one hour and minute mark ).
"They wear you down". Coach Johnston also made a great comment about how
his local community/fans/young girls look up to his Jackrabbit players in the same
way that the UNCONN community/fans/young girls look up to the Huskies and Paige.
He wanted to (justly) praise HIS PLAYERS for what they do for Women's College
Basketball in upper Mid-West. WELL SPOKEN, COACH!
Outstanding program year in year out.

Just watched the game again on a replay. It is not a good thing.

At one point very late into the game (Paige already on the sideline, and the outcome is well decided). The kids are having fun and in a celebratory fashion in the area around the bench most are standing (jumping around and having fun). I noticed Azzi kind of shoulder blocks Sarah where she loses her balance just a little. Immediately adjacent to Sarah, Caroline is sitting on the bench while everyone else on the team is bouncing around. And although the jovial push didn't really knock Strong into her, you could see her immediately caution to Fudd on her roughhouse play, 'there is Caroline sitting right here and you almost knocked me into her!', is what I interpreted her saying. The camera shot then switches and you can see the full bench, and sure enough Caroline, sitting on the bench, having not played a second of the game is holding an ice pack on top of her head.

Yes, I saw Caroline with an ice pack during a free throw late in the game. The ice pack disappeared quickly. But I did see it momentarily. I didn’t imagine it.

Was that Carla Berube congratulating Paige after game ?
She was there..

Ice playing the wing, you say. Wouldn’t she need a more reliable perimeter shot for that, as well as quicker feet and better handles for driving to the rim? I get that she’s not a great fit at the 5. But the 4 looks like a pretty good fit for her current skills. The only downside is that Sarah appears to have the 4 pretty much nailed down.

Note that the combined UCONN defense of Jana, ICE, and Sarah ( and others )
limited Brooklyn Meyer #31 to 2 for 6 shooting and FOUR POINTS! Great "D"!

I was referring to their 3-point shooting, and Meyer is not a 3-point shooter; she took exactly 1 in the season and made it.

With Geno's motion offense, "sometimes" the 3 and 4 are interchangeable. I am glad you agree that she needs out of the 5. I don't think we have a complete sample size to indicate what kind of outside shooter she can be. She has made some perimeter shots in recent games that exhibited good shooting mechanics.

Brady has always had good mechanics and was a very good shooter in HS. She's very capable of making the 15-20 footers but the problem is that she somehow managed to lose her confidence in herself and has only recently started to even look for those shots again. Now that Strong has become their best weapon at the high post, Brady will have to put in a lot of work to improve and quicken her inside moves and shots.
