South Dakota State Postgame Thread

Brady has always had good mechanics and was a very good shooter in HS. She's very capable of making the 15-20 footers but the problem is that she somehow managed to lose her confidence in herself and has only recently started to even look for those shots again. Now that Strong has become their best weapon at the high post, Brady will have to put in a lot of work to improve and quicken her inside moves and shots.
A few weeks ago, Geno expressed public concerns about the fact that Ice liked the 15-20 foot shots too much for his taste -- he would prefer that she focus on scoring in the paint and use those shots as a secondary alternative. He clearly wants her to be a traditional center at least most of the time, and I notice that she appears to be responding to that -- contending for rebounds and for position in the paint more often in recent games than she had in her previous UConn career.

If Geno let Brady play like she did in high school, I believe she would have produced a lot more. Something is not right. In high school she was on the same level as Audi Crooks and maybe even better. Crooks is being allowed to play the way she did then but, Brady has had to change her game. That is not always easy for some players.

So it's on Geno that Ice did not reach her potential? Please... If he was to let every high school player play like they did in high school, then he would have a team just like any other team, a record like any other record and no national championships. Having a big frame does not always translate into a great post player and while years ago, the game was played more in the paint, the advent of the 3 pointer changed the landscape of basketball and accordingly, the makeup of the players and the strategy. Crooks, like Betts, and Cardoso are throwbacks to the true 5 and their teams are structured accordingly. Ice is not in that mold, Jana might be, but the jury is out there, so Geno goes with what's working and who fits best in his plans. I think his record says it all and he might miss on a player once and a while but generally the opportunity is there for those who can adapt and excel.

Geno is doing Ice a huge favor by making her master her low post skills and not merely opting to be a jump shooter. She’ll need both skills to succeed in the W. There’s not much demand for a slow wing there, but a lot of demand for a quick power forward who can also hit an elbow jumper and the occasional 3.

What you described is how Ice played in high school. Brady does not excel at playing the post only. She is not a true post.

Boo Yah, we definitely have thread drift here and Nan is letting it be so.
