South Carolina Postgame Thread

We have to admit ….they played better tonight
As many , besides me mentioned here the lack of post up points …other than 2 from Serah …but no real contribution there…Fudd was rushing shots as she got defended very physically…Strong got triple teamed …etc etc …Blanca never got in rhythm
Respect to Shade and Heckel
Back to the drawing board and our goal is to win championships….but it was a great season
G-D blessings to all here
And go Huskies

Very unprofessional act by coach! We lost, Deal with it without pointing fingers. Dawn said last year after we embarrassed them that they were beaten by a great team. I wish Geno could have displayed that kind of professionalism. But, oh well.

Thank you ladies for a great season, but this was South Carolina's game. Agot Makeer is going to be a star! I hope they win it all. So now we reload and try it all over again. I will be right back here next season cheering on the Huskies as I have been since Geno became the coach. It was a disappointing showing by the team, but the season for me was amazing. You can't win them all!

Normally I would say that our not playing a team over the season works to our advantage. But not always. SC and Staley has played us so often over the years that you just can't rely on them being disrupted in that way.

More importantly, in hindsight I think it hurt that we were unable to play any of SC, UCLA, or Texas in the regular season. Nothing to be done about that; it's just the way things ended up. There's just another level of intensity required when you're playing another team with a great deal of talent, and it's nice to experience that at least once before the late rounds of the NCAA tournament.

I'm not willing to put a final verdict on Geno's behavior at the end of the game, without more information. But on first glance it looks like frustration boiling up in an entirely unproductive way.

Oh well. It was very fun watching this team most of the time. A good season with a disappointing ending.

Some thoughts on the South Carolina game:

Some thoughts on the SC game:
  • A couple weeks ago, a YouTube video asked the rhetorical question, “UConn, unbeatable or untested?” highlighting the fact that the Huskies had not played SC, TX or UCLA this season. Unfortunately, that question was answered today as UConn was tested by a formidable SC team.
  • No team or player expects to lose the last game of the season, and yet, for most, that’s exactly what happens. In his postgame remarks, Geno will undoubtedly remind everyone that, “Winning a championship is hard.” But nobody much will listen, as the expectations by UConn fans are both incredibly high and, at times, unreasonable.
  • For the players, coaches and fans, the loss to SC today is very disappointing. That’s normal. Unfortunately, there will always be those who will look to blame someone for the loss: Geno, the players, the refs, whoever. DON’T!!! The game is basketball. Sometimes good teams get beaten by better teams, and in this instance, SC was the better team.
  • To those players who will be moving on from UConn: Azzi, Caroline, Serah and perhaps Ice & Ayanna as well, we thank you for all you’ve given to UConn WBB and wish you great success wherever your path in life leads you.
  • To the entire team, the coaches and the support staff, Thank you for a great season. UConn WBB fans are truly fortunate.
  • We can take some comfort in the knowledge that next season the Huskies will once again be loaded, and they are still coached by the best coach in basketball. #13 will have to wait a year. Only 8 months until next season…….
Well said, as always, olddude. But the perennial question is: will UConn Nation ever get over "NC or Bust"?

Ughh. Mrs Dove were out on weekly date night...usually Saturday...and t a ped the game. Did a score update and saw the low point total at start of 2nd half. It was obvious we were cooked cuz last game was a struggle. Paige was an X factor with Sarah.

Next year, we fight again.

Got home just in time to see Dawn Staley saying she didn't know what was happening.

I’m proud of our Huskies. You had a great season. Keep your heads up! You win some, you lose some. Tonight didn’t go as you would have expected. SC was just a better team tonight. Thank you, seniors. It was a joy and a pleasure to watch you. To our underclass men, can’t wait to see how you’re going to improve for next season.
Go Huskies!

Ok Boneyard, let’s not be that fan base.

Blaming the refs is ridiculous. Yes, there was a big foul differential. But that didn’t lose the game for us.

Team play was disappointing. Let’s stay away from dogging individual players who are having a terrible evening.

We have loved this team all season.

The Big East is a huge problem. 23 straight scrimmages. Last year was a super team and able to overcome it.
Nothing UConn WBB can do about this.

FWIW Stewart played 3 years in the AAC, an even weaker conference, and her teams won the title those 3 years. They beat everyone, including ND in back to back title games. The whole “BE is weak” is just an excuse. It’s about sound fundamentals and being able to step up and carry your team when the going gets tough. Not everyone is capable of that.

Hats off for a great run. However, I think this game was incredibly bad on both ends. From the shooting, to the “defense” that really was just over physicality and fouls, to just the flow.

Moving forward, I don’t think KK Arnold needs to be the starting PG next season. She offered nothing today. I also do not think Ziebell is going to be ready to contribute next season, they have got to find a way to find some help for Strong. I think Geno needs to hit the portal hard for some shot creation and athleticism.
Allie played very well this year. Significant growth over her Frosh season. Not sure why you’d say she wouldn’t be ready to contribute, she just had a season where she contributed and I’d hope she’d continue growing next year as well.

They outplayed us all game and won sequence after sequence and their stars outplayed our stars, they outcoached us too just an out of charcter game game from Geno obviously. It’s never a good sign when your leader looks panicked. They’re all human it’s the FF it happens.

Not sure why she got little time tonight.

Tough, tough way to end a really great season. I loved watching this group of Huskies play together, but this was a really hard watch.

Not sure what Geno was thinking at the end of the game. That is NEVER the time to try and argue about anything. I hope he apologizes once he cools off.

I'm not sure there are true "problems" that the team needs to "solve" next year. They ended up in a shooting slump at the worst possible time and South Carolina is a well coached, balanced, and experienced team who came to play.

Congrats to South Carolina, Dawn, and the Gamecock fans. Best of luck on Sunday!

Horrid ending to a great season. Shooting was abysmal. Couldn’t have gone worse.

Still proud of the team. A little surprised at Geno to be honest. No judgement though, we all have a bad day.

Best of luck to our seniors! Proud of them and all they accomplished.

I’m rooting for UCLA today! Cory deserves a chip and I hope she gets it.

A few quick thoughts that I hope aren't too influenced by emotion.
  • UConn and especially Azzi played very tight. When her first shots were off, I had a sinking feeling it would be a long night.
  • The small lineup didn't work.
  • Sarah was held and grabbed the entire game.
  • Blanca tried to win the game in four minutes when she first came on the floor.
  • WHY did the guards repeatedly try to make layups that were contested by taller players. KK actually hit the bottom of the backboard with one try.

I wasn’t able to watch the game, but I looked at the stat sheet; UConn had 17 personal fouls vs. SC’s 8. It resulted SC’s 22 free-throws vs UConn’s 6. I don’t know what happened; so could someone kindly give some insight? I don’t mean to “cry a river”, I’m just curious. Thanks.

That was brutal. South Carolina came ready to dominate and they did. They had us playing tentative and scared all night. End result is we get sent packing and the perfect season comes to an abrupt end on a whimper

Feels bad.

Refs were bad though, come on. They were all over Strong long before the halftime eruption. They allowed Raven Johnson to get away with a technical while staring straight at her.

Not sure what the post-game nonsense was about but the officiating played into SC's hands.
Can’t win when you can’t make shots….😔

Felt the whole time like everyone in F4 had an equal chance this year. And also wasn’t feeling great about the team.

The great UConn teams have been dominant in the tourney. This one had some struggles.

While everyone blames the big east, I think the bigger issue was the nonconference. No SC game in Feb and a bad Tenn team. MLK game was a no contest against an ND team that was a mess.

I said early in the season, and was promptly shouted down, that the concern for UConn was tightening up in a big game.

Azzi has always had a mix of big games and lesser games. I thought she had gotten past it but it showed again during the NCAAs.

Blanca and Sarah also got overwhelmed and sped up. For SS I think it was the combo of physical play wearing her down a bit, but also SCs quick ability to close out — it got her rushed abit.

And for those who want to say it was one bad game — there have been signs of this for several games.

Biggest kudos to Shade and Heckel. They came out to play and were the stars for the night.

That’s fair I guess, but she seems to struggle against athleticism and the top teams next year are going to have that in bunches. Defensively, I just don’t think she’ll be able to stay in front of anybody in games like tonight. With Fudd gone, who is left to create off the dribble?
