it hurts to go down a flight of stairs when one has sore legs because of the eccentric contraction. the contraction is much greater than when walking. The contraction causes pain.

I means that, in addition to the obstacles of assimilating to college life, society as a whole with its multitude of expectations has given him that added burden. His body is "sore" from carrying such a load and for once his internal fortitude has decided to take the easy path (ie take the elevator down one floor) instead of digging deep down and meet the challenge (ie the stairs)....

or...

his legs were just sore because JC ran the piss out of everyone and he just wanted to rest his legs by taking the elevator.
