Songs that make you sad...for whatever reason

Wendy was a real person, who contracted AIDS through her line of work (prostitution) and rather than let AIDS take over her life she committed suicide via a heroin OD. The song was written by Andy Prieboy (Wall of Voodoo) and sang by Johnette Napolitano. She thought the lyrics were really powerful and recorded it again with her band Concrete Blonde. I've had good friends die from AIDS, so...there's that:

Jackson Browne classic. I have a 30yo daughter who has NEVER asked me for any advice on anything. Yeah, she's independent.

Bach prelude in D minor. It's the first one.

I don't know if it makes me sad, exactly, but it definitely touches me.

Somebody put down The Freshman by the Verve Pipe but it disappeared fro some reason..8 thumbs up for that one.

I forgot Wonderful Tonight..Eric Clapton

This song was written by a Welshman named Huw Williams, who wrote a lot about World War II and postwar times. It's sung here by American Connie Dover, who sings a lot of American old-time songs as well as some from the British Isles. The song is about a young girl who dies in a German air raid, and the effect this had on her family.

Another absolute tearjerker, somewhat less obscure this time. Annachie Gordon is an old Scottish ballad, in both the Child and Roud collections. It's been widely recorded, Loreena McKennitt sings my favorite version. It's about a young woman who's in love with one man but her father demands she marries someone else. It doesn't end happily.

The saddest is Manic Street Preachers -- Intense Humming of Evil about the Holocaust, but it is hard to listen to.

Much more fun is Lara Fabian's despair in "Je Suis Malade":

Classic live version with English subtitles:

And then the even sadder she can "barely find the effort to sing her despair is so great" performance where even her pianist abandons her:

Another heartbreaker in French (if it makes you feel better, she doesn't speak French either):

Creedence did a LOT of great songs, but every time I hear this one (as I did just now mowing the lawn), I realize it's my favorite of theirs. The lyrics are so powerful, and the guitar work is amazing.
