I always thought that T Bone Burnett was the original, I heard it first from him and it was quite a while before I heard the MM version.

It was Carol Channing’s signature song before Marilyn Monroe sang it. My mother used to sing it around the house.

The White Stripes with a surprising ballad

A little southern rock for your Monday morning.

Looking For An Old Friend - Georgia Thunderbolts

Really liked this band. Unfortunately, the lead singer left to form a new band (and then left that band to go solo). SMH.

As someone said, the British version of the Black Crowes.

My Only Friend - The Temperance Movement

Going to see these guys this weekend in NYC.

Old Friend - Robert Jon and the Wreck

.-.
Steely Dan's wonderful "Home at Last":

So long hey thanks my friend
I guess I'll try my luck again....

Jackson Brown
She was a friend to me when I needed one
Wasn't for her, I don't know what I'd done

Another song by Queen that mentions friends in the lyrics, though you have to listen for awhile to get there. This song did not get the air play it deserved.

.-.
The early Fleetwood Mac, Bob Welch on the lead vocals:

"It's the same kind of story
That seems to come down from long ago
Two friends having coffee together
When something flies by their window"......
