Lehigh just beat Duke. It makes me feel great but it also makes me realize a few things

1. there is more parity
2. Most importantly, hard work and effort and teamwork trump tradition and "talent"

we have seen alot of threads mentioning the old UConn style. The famous Donny Marshall runout after a made basket for the easy two as an example.

I'll take that first championship over all the other because it came from a team effort that included hard nose D full length of the court. And a superior offensive scheme with players that had little hype. I don't think Calhoun was a better coach then but I think he had players that cared more about effort. Calhoun's more recent teams are almost totally dependant on a star player's ability to take over games. Lacking that it just looks like a cluster F00k. I honestly don't see a system out there these days. Duke has a system it relys on threes. when it works they win. What the heck is our system? I pray the Daniels is better than he has shown because we need someone to step in. Anyone that thinks it's going to be next years freshman has not paid attention to the last ten years of shattered expectations for our incoming classses top recruits. Last year we had Kemba. I still have no clue how even with Kemba we went on that insane run. We sucked last year except for that end of the year run. But thats how strange the last few years have been. We have this razor fine edge betweeen goood and bad and it can go either way on any given day. I have no clue how JC deals with it. Long story short I Would take a Donny Marshall team any day. Quite frankly I would take Lehigh today. It's a pleasure to see a 40 minute effort.

Most importanlty I need another beer

The "Donny Marshall" teams also had Donyell Marshall and Ray Allen on them. Both of those guys were First Team All Americans at one point in their career. They also stuck around for 3 years. Kemba didnt become the super star that he was until that 3rd year. I think Lamb, Napier, Boat, Drummond, et al would be much better next year if they chose to stick around. Donny Marshalls teams lost in second round, then NIT, then sweet sixteen then final 8. Kemba's teams went Final Four, NIT, National Champions. So although we "sucked" last year, I would not trade it for any one of Donny's years.

Donny's teams were more consistent to be sure but they also always came up short in the postseason and that is where teams are judged.

We didn't suck at the beginning of the year, either. There was that whole Maui thing - where we overachieved. The grind of the Big East probably got us, and we probably played more to our talent level over those 18 games, but then we found a little mojo.

Ray Allen had 36 points against the 1995 National Champs...and came back for his junior year.

That would NEVER happen today.

If todays NBA Draft wasn't so ridiculous and todays players weren't so eager to leave before they are ready, Lamb and Drummond would be back next year because their performances don't warrant their draft status and despite all the insane chatter we would be better off without them, we would be poised for a great year next year with them back.

But times are different. We don't even know if Oriakhi will be back because his feelings were hurt by coach. They don't build many Donny Marshall's now a day.

You should watch more of these mid-major teams...

Duke doesn't suck. The system doesn't work for the kids he has. Our offense sucks because it doesn't work for the kids we have. We had so much turmoil and very little consistency this year. Too bad for Duke......NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
