I have been viewing this season through the prism of how good we can be next season. Most of the season I thought the trio of Jalen, Alterique, and Larrier would be good enough to make us a top 15 next year. We saw how much one player can make a difference when Jalen was out with his concussion. Alterique and Larrier are of the same caliber as Jalen.
What has got me even more excited for next year are:
1) Emergence of Vance Jackson. His turnaround is no longer just a small sample size. Over the pat 7 games he is shooting 52% from the field, 52% from 3, 73% free throw line, averaging 3.4 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and scoring 11.6 pts per game. He is taking smarter shots and is more confident about his shooting. He will help spread opposing defenses and allow guys like Jalen, Alterique and Larrier to attack the rim.
2) The flashes of talent Juwan shows in his limited minutes. Anyone who has played bball knows Juwan is a baller. Good looking shooting form. Good knack for the ball for rebounds, and can finish well around the rim. While this maybe a small sample size, he has grabbed 17 rebound in 54 minutes of play in the past 5 games. That comes out to 13 rebounds on per 40 basis. With more time I believe Juwan will show he is the real deal.
So brining this back to the SMU game, although it was a terrible outcome, the SMU game continued to show Vance is playing very well and shooting lights out, and continued to show that Juwan will be a very talented player.
Yes Jalen shot the ball terribly (1-10) but he is still shooting 44% from the field and 35% from 3 over the course of the season. His 5 turnovers during the SMU game are not too much of a concern next year as Alterique will be handling the point guard role. KO has said that Jalen is more of a scoring guard and Alterique is the point guard. Jalen has shown all season he can score.
So in conclusion the SMU game further proves next year we will be loaded. it may take a few games for Alterique and Larrier to gel back in with the team, but if everyone stays healthy I have no doubt we will one of the best teams in the country next year.
