"Slick" Rick has that slick moniker for a reason. It has been interesting watching his transformation since the return of his banning. Through Iona and then accelerated by the move to the Johnnies, he has been masterful about curating his media prescence and presenting as the contrite, elder statesman coaching legend.

Presenting himself as "good guy" Rick, doing stuff like making video love letters to Kentucky fans, endorsing Mark Pope via a self-important video, making a video urging Kentucky fans to not boo Calipari on his return last Saturday. Actually paying a visit to Rupp arena and attending a Kentucky game, which if you really think about it, it is so weird for a coach to do in mid season. Another good one was his tweet congratulating Providence on their comeback. LOL he congratulated PC on what amounts to a moral victory, and PC fans not only didnt get mad which should be the reaction to that transparent gladhanding, PC fans ate it up. The guy is a master. He loves sticking his beak where it doesnt belong to further cultivate that new "good guy Rick. your affable humble verteran servant of all things college basketball".

It is all a ruse. Pitino is Pitino. All fantastic coaches (and he is a legendary coach love him or hate him) have Egos that can be measured in Hilton Armstrong units, and ever since his return to coaching it is eating him up that he is not the measuring stick that all other current coaches are measured by. So far the limelight he craves has been gained by all the items I listed above. But what he most wants is to be universally be called what Hurley is (and called himself recently ;)) "The best coach in &*&(*ing sport". Hurley at every turn has blocked Pitino from ascending to what slick Rick thinks is his. First by stopping Pitino's Iona team in the 1st round of the 23 tourney. Oh Rick had dreams of taking that Iona team on a little run that March to have everyone kissing his pinkie ring again. Its been quite a while, a decade at least, since anyones done that. Then Rick joins the BigEast and his arrival is coincidentally at the same time as a team 2 hours to the north has a historic back to back title runs, beating his team 3 times, when just winning one of those 3 games wouldve been enough to get Pitino back to the bright lights of the NCAA tourney. To make it more painful, another coach becomes a huge legend in his own right, in real time, in his same league, in his own backyard. Dan Hurley is overshadowing Rick Pitino. On the court and in the press Nothing is is worse to Pitino than that. It eats at him, it haunts him.

Now Pitino is bringing his 11-1 BigEast team who is on a real roll, to ground zero, the place that holds everything he craves. It is all right in front of him. Not only can he beat the back to back NCAA champions, but he can beat the current "Face of the game" coach all in one day. He is salivating at the prospect, he wants to make it clear that he is the King. I promise you this is not just another game to slick Rick. It holds everything he feels that was wrongfully taken from him when he was ousted from Louisville.

I for one would like to deny him that pleasure. You want to make your bones again, Rick?

As long as he keeps trying to build teams through the portal and completely ignores bringing in talented HS recruits to develop, I’m not worried.

He’ll also never have an actual home court advantage so good luck to him

Last year after a game, Pitino and Calhoun were on a post game show together. Imagine that.

Let's not call our victory over his Iona team or our wins last year against his 1st year St. John team real wins.

Anyways, the fun starts now. At storrs, at msg. Huge huge huge games, that matter.

And slick Rick is always slick Rick. Wonderful coach. Dirty, fake guy. But no question he's a phenomenal coach.

But on the MSG court it says they're New York's team.

PC's fanbase's view of Pitino is strange.

I've known quite a few PC fans/alum over the decades and the only way to describe them is this:

Picture a middle aged man who when he was 13 or 14 went on a (very innocent) date with classmate who happened to be say Scarlett Johansson. Decades later, any time he sees her on a television interview or in a movie trailer he gushes and proudly states that he was one of the first guys she ever dated.

That's the type of reaction you get from PAC fan when Pitino's name comes up.

If you really are New Yorks team do you really have to have it say "New Yorks team" on the court. That is such a Mets and Nets thing to do.

I think this would be one of the most satisfying wins of Pitinos career. Not the most decorated or historic, but personally satisfying. That slick Rick smile will extend an extra 10% during the post game if they can pull this one off.

Even if it is their year, and they happen to beat us a couple times, will be good for the league to have an authentic rivalry going between two alpha New Yorkers. This is what the conference was built on.

I for one like St. John's being good again. It makes the UConn-St. John's game like the battle for New York even though UConn is Connecticut's state school.

This only helps the Big East and in turn helps UConn.

That was my post almost exactly 1 year ago on Feb 2, 2024 in this thread (Satan is coming back to MSG).

UConn-St. John's having a "Battle for New York" in MSG is fantastic publicity for the entire Big East and has the ability to garner national attention.

Now having said all of that, I would like UConn to beat that a-- in Gampel this Friday.

I want UConn to win all their games of course, including the next 5 games, but if they end up with a 4-1 record in their next 5 games with the lone loss coming at MSG to St. John's, I will be pleased. As for regular season games (we all know NCAAT matters the most), I want these next 2 games a lot.

Not on our watch.

You've gone downhill so much since your summer wedding story across the pond.

I pray the Huskies performance on Friday isn't as weak as your post.

You used a lot of words to say "F Slick Rick and his image rehab tour".

Could have thrown in a Blake Lively reference to stick with current events.

You have to give him some credit. Not much, he’s dirty as hell. But he’s made his money and some, he’s 72 and could be skiing sailing and getting lade all day everyday. But he’s still grinding away at bball. He mostly really love it, or he has a terrible financial manager.

Although I don't like his character or antics (remember handshake gate?), why would anyone want to poke the bear and give him and his team any bulletin board material before biggest game of the season so far for both programs.

Frankly, I don't care about beating SJU because of who their coach is or the fact that they were once a storied national and NYC program that has been irrelevant for so long. I want to beat them because they are the one at the top of the BE coming into Friday's matchup that we need to catch and eventually overtake. That's more than enough motivation for anyone, fan, team and coaches alike.

Ricky P is a h*ll of a coach. He and all associated with their program desperately want SJU to regain their relevance. I think many BE fans and programs would like to see them and Georgetown return to the top of the conference to return it to greatness again, as long as it's behind their program. I just hope Friday, or any game against UConn, is not part of their elevation story.

Like a true champion, I hope our guys come out at the bell swinging and balling like they did against Marquette and carry the mo till they get the TKO.
