Pitchers that had real innings out of the bullpen last year: Vance, Feehan, Fischer, Jolin, Moore (14.1 - mostly garbage innings), Catalina (10.0 - mostly garbage innings). Nobody else had double digit innings out of the pen. Nobody else had double digit innings out of the pen.
Pitchers with real innings out of the pen this year: Oberg, Feehan, Jolin, Cross, Fischer (early in the season), Hurvul. Healey may also get to double digit innings to match the likes of Catalina and Moore in terms of garbage time.
So 6 pitchers in both cases. If/When Ward gets back to 100% and rejoins the weekend rotation, the smart money says one of Fischer/Tabakman/Dettman will return to the pen and pick up inning in middle relief. So I think the idea that the bullpen is being used differently than it would be if Blood was here is a myth.
Also, if you compare the results of said bullpen pitchers, Oberg more or less cancels out Vance, Feehan/Jolin both were there last year and have produced similar results, Cross/Hurvul cancel out Moore/Catalina. Feehan is the only one that has struggled noticeably compared to last year. It is basically the same on the whole though. Maybe a slight step down. The difference is that this year we don't have a guy like Barnes to go out there and toss 8 innings every time out and give the bullpen a day off. If Blood was here, Ward wouldn't magically be a dominant ace like that.
Also, suddenly we don't have a combination of offense and starting pitching that hands the bullpen an 8 run lead more often than not. So this year's bullpen is pitching under pressure more than they were last year which changes everything. So your fringe bullpen pitchers are clearly going to have more issues than they did last year.
Is the loss of Blood good for the team? Obviously not. He was a great coach and recruiter. But stop trying to blame this teams woes on the loss of one coach leaving. Maybe it has more to do with losing guys Barnes, Vance, Nappo, Glynn, Van Woert, Springer, Nemeth, Ahmed, Elliot and Andreoli. Of course Blood had something to do with guys like Barnes and Nappo, but they were also not just Freshmen and Sophomores (Dettman, Tabakman, Marzi). This team is young and will have its growing pains. We all knew that coming in so stop acting like a loss to St. John's is some catastrophe.
I get that the loss to Brown was an absolute nightmare, but it was the result of the SP allowing 7 runs. That's one guy who has been a pretty reliable arm for us. Up until the Brown game he had performed better than last year when Blood was here. For some reason, he just couldn't get the job done that day. It was the type of game we probably win 99 times out of 100. Everything that could go wrong did and we barely lost on a walk off hit.
This team and program will be fine in the long run. They probably won't win the Big East this year. They probably won't win the tournament, but they have a shot. They almost certainly won't get an at large bid unless, but that was a bit of a reach coming into the season given what we lost from last year's team.
Again, the loss to Brown was probably the worst loss in recent years but other than that the season has basically gone like I expected it would. The team is 8-2 in conference which is pretty damn good given how many new faces are starting.
