Silas rated one of the top 10 players in CBB per Evan Miya

Silas is a special special player as long as he stays on the court but he’s so good and aggressive defensively that it will be a challenge. Do you tell him to back off? No because the refs are going to call him anyway.
He’s the key to our season IMO. He’s almost too unselfish which is why he has so many assists at the expense of points. Love the kid.

Silas a 9.40, so a tick below based on the current. Right there. In good company.

Petty, but hate seeing Ngongba having so much success after what he pulled with UConn

He had a top 3, and then (days before announcing) issued a top 2 with UConn cut from the list. I remember Hurley posting something cryptic about it at the time implying he was irked

He's also being mocked high. I thought our chances were good given his cousin was with us. He would have been a nice get.

Question becomes if you'd rather him this year, or Tarris. Together they're redundant so unlikely we'd have both

If using data, Ngongba is ranked the #1 center, Tarris is 8 or 9 depending on what position you slot Toppin into.

Lotsa posts from a month ago where people were calling for him to get benched in favor of Smith.

And lotsa posts from the rest of us saying, patience, grasshopper.
And some of those same people who wanted Malachi to start have no patience for him now that he's struggling.

Maybe Millender should be starting.

Fair - I find the analytics a little wonky for individual players / splitting hairs when it’s close. Safe to say we’d have been great with either

Yup I was one of those people (as I pat myself on the back).

Thank you! As I was reading gtcam's post I was thinking the same thing. Everyone seems to have already forgotten Newton's first few months at UConn. He wasn't the Tristen Newton 2nd year here that some people seem to only remember.

I have faith in Demary. He's talented but he needs more experience in the UConn system. He's coming from Georgia where he was asked to be more of a scorer most of the season because their team kind of sucked. He averaged 19.3 points over the final 10 games. He's learning to be something different at UConn. He will get there. I'm confident.

Does he have a low post game or does he just catch lobs and clean up ORebs? Seems more like Samson than a Reed. If Duke could dump it down to him for a basket they wouldn’t be struggling to score outside Boozer and Evans.

I love this kid. He has doubled his assists while lowering his turnovers from last year to this year. He’s an excellent defender, and his scoring will come up when he’s ready to take more shots based upon familiarity with the system. He’s way ahead of Newton at this point.

Time will tell if he graduates to the smoothness of Newton from a passing and creation perspective. He’s a far better defender, that’s for sure. Also hard to compare because Newton had so many studs around him.

10.5 what? 7.91 is his BPR.
Looking at the wrong stat. Deleted

For whatever it's worth, he's our highest rated player (#24) by Torvik at 10.5 on that BPM scale

For comparison, the only guy in the top 50 for us was Sanogo at #9. The 2024 team, whew, blew the field away. Clingan at #2, Spencer #8, Newton #25, and Karaban #29

Silas has progressed extremely well, his BE counting stats are fantastic.

He's at 11.6 PPG, 4.0 RPG, 7.3 APG, 1.7 TO, 1.9 STL, on 44.4/51.7/84.1 splits. His 2P% is probably his only real weakness right now at 38.6% in BE play and he takes some tough shots.

Overall (OOC included), he has almost 30 more assists than he had all of last year at Georgia. Crazy he was only 3/14 OOC from three and is now at 18/42 (15/28 in BE play). Against the 6 power conference teams he was 3/8, so it wasn't even the level of competition, but 0/6 against the lower quad teams.

Really want him to become much more assertive trying to get his own offense (he did much better against Prov I think out of necessity). He needs to start playing with the mindset that he is the best player on the court at all times.

We don’t have many guys that can go get their own bucket and put stress on the defense, so we become overly reliant on running our offense to manufacture points schematically.

I think that really unlocks the value of Hurley offense. While you are trying to contain lead guard like Newton/Demary, you also have whirlwind of activity amongst the rest of the team you need to keep track of (and often fail to do so).

When it is just the motion offense on its own with the ball handler posing no actual threat to score and effectively waiting for a pass to come open, it is much simpler to defend.

ESPN has a list of the top 50 players this year. Bear, Silas and Alex made it. Amazingly, Mullins not on the list. Geez that is hard to believe.
