We check in at #8. Some interesting stats about our 3-pt shooting percentages:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/co...a-wildcats-syracuse-orange-wisconsin-badgers/

He poses a good question, is our 3-pt shooting % sustainable?

I say, yes, partially. Our team is experienced and has good chemistry, returning lots of guys familiar with each other. Ollie runs good plays in an offense that is putting players in positions to succeed. Bazz and Boat are finding guys in their spots and shooting well themselves, making good decisions. The perimeter ball movement was good in games early on, somewhat slacked, and now has been pretty decent lately. We are making the extra pass for good shots.

I don't doubt that the outrageous percentages (esp Giffey's) will drop, and we might have some cold shooting nights, but I still think this team is well-constucted enough to do some damage come March.

I like Luke Winn for SI, he does his homework.

I agree, there will likely be some cold shooting nights, especially against better defenses.

UConn is currently takings good percentage of open threes. Calhoun and Napier may be the only two to take a decent amount of "bad" threes. Calhoun because he seems to be pressing and Napier because he makes them.

Giffey, Kromah, Daniels and Boatright have mostly taken uncontested shots from three. They all have good enough form to convert those shots.

A good defensive team may be able to force UConn into taking bad shots, it wouldn't shock me, but it won't be easy with Napier and Boatrights ability to drive and dish

Giffey takes about three threes a game. He would have to go 0-18 to get to exactly 40% on the year. That means he would basically have to go on a massive 6 game cold streak.

Napier is in a similar position.

Daniels has been hitting over 40 after a bad first three games. He's still streaky but I think his last 6 games are more indicative than the first three

Boatright and Kromah are being pretty selective in their shooting, if that continues, I don't see their percentages taking huge dips.

When we meet a coach who doesn't have a help on the penetrator philosphy and an eraser in the middle our numbers will drop. Our dual PG line up has coaches picking which poision to drink and the 3 ball is our draino right now. I'm surprised we've seeen as much zone as teams have played, but in the man to man teams don't have many answers when KO runs iso for Bazz and Boat.

The law of averages says no, we don't sustain that level of shooting. Let's be real, they're shooting at an insane clip right now. But outside of rebounding, the team is doing a lot of other things well and that shouldn't be overlooked.

p.s. I like Winn too, but how does UNC jump 6 spots in that list? They need to prove they're consistent before jumping up to the top 10 in any list.

Can't begin to count how many times I've been annoyed with his shot selection from three, only to be silenced and consoled by the other team inbounding the ball beneath the hoop.

There may be 1-2 teams like that in the country.

Calhoun takes way too many threes . It's rather insane. Those floaters in the lane are money for him though ! Btw I predict both Giffey and napiers percentage to stay astronomical. For one, the three point line is too easy for both. it's basically a midrange pull. If they're open ? Lights out

I think Calhoun feels pressure to keep pace with Giffey's improvement and lights out shooting from 3, so he's forcing it a little. And its affecting other parts of his game too when his shot isn't falling. He can't let that happen.

Overall, I'm not concerned. I'm glad he's still shooting, thats the only way to bust out of a slump. His game will come around. We'll need Omar to hit big shots this year, and I don't doubt that he will.

We don't take bad three point shots. They aren't forced and I believe that has a lot to do with Ollie

that's false. omar has forced a ton. That's why Giffey has taken 16 less threes; while playing around the same minutes. not trying to heap on him, but it's hard to ignore.

I disagree. Omar plays more which is why he has more shots. Also if you watch his previous games he's open and has a clear shot Yes he should be more versatile but that's his game now

Omar is probably the only one that needs to work on his shot selection more. He's not horrible but he is a bit trigger happy.

Up to now, we shoot 36 2s and 19 3s a game. It's a little tilted toward the 3, however given that all our meaningful scorers are on the outside (Save DD who is a little bit of both) that ratio isn't all that terrible.

I like Luke Winn for SI, he does his homework.

Isn't Winn the one who broke the conventional wisdom mold and statistically determined that Butler couldn't make a basket because of our defense, and not just because they "had a bad day"?

Omar has missed a lot of wide open 3s. He is an aggressive shooter, he takes more shots than Giffey would take, but he rarely takes a shot when he's not open and is rarely rushed or at risk of being blocked. The problem is that one reason he gets so many open looks is that he misses most of them. If he started hitting them, he'd be more closely covered.

It's too early to say he shoots too much. If he starts making his open shots and other teams start guarding him closely and he keeps shooting at the same pace, then that would be a problem.

If he can't start making open shots, then his minutes will have to go down.

Yep. Great article.

If you refuse to credit the Huskies' D after seeing these numbers, you're just being stubborn. Hard evidence emerges even in the first few minutes, when UConn sets a tone that makes Butler tentative on its shot attempts and reluctant (or unable) to attack the rim for the rest of the game.

Yeah when he gets into a funk he tries to shoot his way out. When his handle gets better and he's fully recovered/comfortable from his surgery he can attack the basket more. He has more this year so far than last so far
