lost their jobs as coaches of a HS BB team due to some screwball shouting racial slurs in the crowd at one of their games. Proof that we haven't come that far at all?

Personally I would've ignored the idiot...
 
How sad. Wonder what they did, but it doesn't matter. The instigator should have been punished.

The article linked clearly doesn't tell the whole story. Facts need to be brought forward, as this example of poor journalism provides little more than a (potentially) biased opinion from each side of the story. A better article can be found here.

It seems clear that Gate81 is correct, and that the termination is due to reactions of Schimmel/Moses that were not in line with school expectations.

Read the link, and see if you are still "f-n outraged", and if so, by whom? I'm not outraged, but I am disappointed in what is being reported of some people. Was Moses verbally abusive, and if so, how? Did Manning say it, and if so, was he using a racist comment by using the term "reservation"? Shoni referred to "The Rez" all the time, and not always in glowing terms. Is it OK for Schimmel to go to a game with a racial slur on his t-shirt, just to make a point? The word is cut-off by the photo, and censored in other pics that I saw, so we don't REALLY know what it said.

This looks to me like poor behavior by some fans, and over-reaction by adults that made the situation worse. I feel bad for the Schimmel kids.

I cannot presume to tell a so-called minority what is offensive to them. If they find what was said to them offensive, then it was offensive. I don't care how anyone else feels. For me, that's end of story. As an African-American that loves this country to death, no one is anyone's n-word. Now, did the parents over react? Possibly. However, I know how people react on this forum when I try to say UConn fans who were around during the years of UT's vile accusations about Geno and Maya Moore should just move on for the betterment of WBB. I know how other African-Americans react to perceived slights no matter how small. A raw nerve is a raw nerve.

But as coach and asst. coach, they were representing the school. Even if they were offended, they were still supposed to represent the school.

But we still don't know what was really said and by whom.

While this sounds reasonable, it takes you into areas that quickly become unreasonable. The same issue that we struggle with when rather than 'racially' offensive, we try to broaden any are of 'offensive' behavior or 'harassment' from clearly defined guidelines into the 'perception by the harassed/offended party.' We as a society have to come up with some 'generally' reasonable standards of what does and does not constitute crossing these lines we want to draw in the sand. We struggle with this legally and socially.

And that is the problems we will always have in a democracy of varied cultures that wants to see itself as a meritocracy. The Pandora's Box of racial and social sensitivities is chained open. Justice Potter Stewart once said (and I paraphrase) 'I cannot define pornography, but I know it when I see it". Well I cannot define guidelines of racially and social sensitivity for every group, but I'll know it when they hear it.

I learned just the other day that the word Lynch is considered offensive. Who knew?

The real problem is that too many people walk around looking to be offended.

This is an interesting story. Most think of Shoni and her sister Jude as Native Americans, but, in fact, only her mother is an NA. The Schimmel girls' father is a German Jew. Anyone slinging racial slurs at these guys has a rich field from which to draw. But lovers of the sport and Rez Ballers everywhere will never forget when Shoni spun around and confronted B. Griner's belly button eye to eye. The best revenge is a lay-up.

Thanks for the link - the ESPN article was extremely one-sided. There are other articles documenting the behavior of the parents. There very well may have been some racist individuals in the crowd. Unfortunately, it appears that Schimmel and Moses we not exactly patron saints, and this was likely not an exception to normal behavior.

As depressing as all that is, could someone please tell me how an official on the court could "feel threatened" by someone in the stands. Especially a celebrity?

I get having a fan, celebrity or not, ejected because they are saying inappropriate things, behaving badly, etc. - I've seen it happen, in fact (not at Rutgers, I'm happy to say). But - the officials in both cases I was at didn't have the person removed because they felt "threatened", rather, they felt the persons conduct violated fan policies.

True. I am surprised that the person yelling the alleged racial slurs was not thrown out of the game.
 
Okay but now I have a better understanding of why recruiting patterns for that family were what they were. Could be a challenge to have those parents, particularly if you don't give their child enough playing time.

So what do we have here. A fan in the stands shouting offensive remarks to a pair of hair trigger people. A bunch of officials too fearful to eject the fan. The coach is fired for being a jerk, the fan and the officials get off scot free. Who suffers the most? WBB and all us fans. What a mess.

A very interesting point. I don't recall much about the recruiting process with her, except that UConn wasn't amongst the finalists. That certainly could have had an impact, as both Geno and CD have stated in the past that parents/cadre often have an impact on recruiting a player, including how they can sometimes end the process entirely.

I've coached teams for my daughter and for friends' kids in the past, and it never ceases to amaze me how adults can ruin a kids game.

Why does WBB suffer? They were HS boys bb coaches. I'm a casual observer, I don't think any differently of the WBB player.
 
This is just damn sad. I wish we could live in a society free of this sorry business.

Because we don't need anyone comparing WBB to the shenanigans that goes on in men's ball. Some other casual observers may say differently than you.
 
I might be a little dense because I'm still not sure exactly why they were fired. :eek:

The question is if this incident was the reason for dismissal or just the Straw breaking the Camels back. It would seem logical that this was the excuse or rational for for the school in getting rid of someone that didn't turn out to be what they expected.
