Shabazz Napier Transitioning To Coaching Career

And for every 1 of them, there are 10,000 failed ex players who tried to coach.
I know this was a direct response to someone, but I'm just adding that coaching is a tough life. How many coaches stay at a job for 5 years or more? You keep moving to get better gigs, or you get fired with a regime change. Even once you reach the "dream job" level, the team/school will cut you loose quickly. There's only a tiny portion of coaches that get to the dream job level and have enough success that they become (somewhat) untouchable. Great money at the top levels, but crazy stressful.

Why?
He's been tutored by 2 HOF Coaches and a coach who was an NBA point guard. He's got NBA and Euro experience. He is a 1st Team AA and 2x Champion. You know his resume.

No one is saying that Bazz will become an awesome coach or even a successful one. What I'm saying is that Bazz is a leader who is made for coaching and I would never bet against him or think that he won't be able to coach.

My future coaching comment was hoping Bazz takes a Karl Hobbs/Ricky Moore/K Free UConn route. UConn is a fantastic place to learn basketball (playing or coaching) and develop. Selfishly I want to one day see Bazz on our side coaching even if an assistant.

I guess I lean more to the side that what you said doesn't really translate to being a good coach. This happens here all time time. Ray Allen, Rip Hamilton, etc, etc.....would be a great coach someday!

Most coaches that I see successful actually weren't NBA guards with NCAA titles or AA's in their back pocket.

Patrick Ewing? Isaiah Thomas? Danny Manning? Penny Hardaway? Juwan Howard? Clyde Drexler?

Successful coaching is not just winning Championships or being a Head Coach. Rod Strickland (I loved his game) is an example of a 'good' coach with longevity. Coaching is a job and Bazz comes with a good resume and has proven leadership, and I believe he has a coaching career in his future.

So yes I would hope Bazz does well enough to sit on our bench again (i.e. any coaching capacity). That's what I'm rooting for.

Shabazz doesn’t really fit the profile of any of those guys. He wasn’t a lottery pick, NBA all-star. He was a college great who used his intelligence and IQ to help his game. Those ARE the guys that usually make good coaches.

I don't follow. Who in that bunch is/was a successful coach? Maybe Penny, if you measure success as still being employed.

They weren't. All could be considered failures or disappointments and all were better than Napier on the court. I worded the response poorly and my point was, this place automatically thinks "great husky, can't wait for him to be our coach".

Watch. I'll just mention Cam Spencer and someone will jump right on that.

Okay. But in this case, I agree with the others that Bazz has the chance to be a good coach. I don't think many were saying that about say, Donyell.

Yeah, his point has validity except that Shabazz isn’t in that category of player.
