Linear Rotations:
Cumulative Unique Rotations Sorted By Plus/Minus.
  • For more analytics, see CBB Analytics free tier for access to UConn’s rotations analytics (including advanced ones normally available only on an entire game basis).

Saving these here for comparison to the second half of the season.

The attached is an attempt at an explicating framework by segregating rotations into a hierarchy that reflects prioritization of objectives:
  • (a) Winning Time Rotations &1;
  • (b) Pocket Bridge Rotations &1;
  • (c) Top Bridge Rotations &1;
  • (d) Bottom Bridge Rotations &1.
Through 15 games, Geno and CD have:
  • used nearly 6 hours and 55 minutes (out of 10 hours of game time or 69.17%) [(a) + (b) minutes] to win games;
  • used 1 hour and 14 minutes (12.33%) [(c) minutes] to develop the extended rotation players that will come handy in March/April;
  • used 1 hour and 51 minutes (18.50%) [(d) minutes] to develop future years’ rotation players;
  • used his starters a total of 2 hours and 41 minutes (or 26.8%) [rotations #1 and #4 in (a)];
  • identified the Top Rotation Players as KK, Azzi, Ash, Sarah, Serah, Kayleigh, Allie and Blanca [see (a) and (b)];
  • identified additional rotation players as Jana, Caroline and (maybe (?)) Ice [see (b) and (c)].

This analysis is through the first half of the season (first training cycle) which coincides with the OOC schedule.
  • This first training cycle is diagnostic, setting up a firm base and trajectory for March/ April success and it is against the harder part of the schedule;
  • The second training cycle (that includes heat check games) affords more bandwidth for farm system development and metamorphosis;
  • The first training cycle is also where Geno and CD give reps to new top rotation players; there are 4 (out of 8) new top rotation players this year: Serah, Kayleigh, Allie and Blanca;
  • Geno and CD had been masterful in utilizing the schedule — such as it is — for farm system development.
Here are further observations and suppositions under this framework;
  • Geno and CD prefer to have two in-game substitution cycles (one in each half, going from rotations (a) to (c)/(d));
  • Geno and CD make the determination of when to switch rotation types, which is a function of how competitive a game is turning out to be;
  • Sometimes a game is so lopsided that there is only one in-game substitution cycle and (d) rotations are deployed earlier than they normally would be;
  • Sometimes a game is too competitive that (a) rotations are deployed more with the necessary (b) rotations [ to give one top rotation player a breather ] are kept to a bare minimum;
  • It will be interesting to compare the first and second training cycles data to detect roster improvement and metamorphosis.
The success of the evolving game play shows the interconnectivity of several factors (from recruiting and on) in Geno and CD’s unicorn program.

&1 Definitions:
  • (a) Winning Time Rotations: Any five in the Top Rotation that also includes Azzi and Sarah; these rotations have maximum spurtability;
  • (b) Pocket Bridge Rotations: bridge rotations (i.e. not Winning Time Rotations) designed to give one player in a Winning Time Rotation a breather;
  • (c) Top Bridge Rotations: not (a) or (b), and involves a significant number of Top Rotation Players;
  • (d) Bottom Bridge Rotations: not (a), (b) or (c).

This is phenomenal work. I note that when Jana was in the game against the Hall the team was +16. I think Kelis has to not try to score all the time but let the game come to her.
