Seth Davis in The Athletic - "Buy, sell or hold? The annual Hoop Thoughts Stock Report has all the answers" 1/6/20

Blown put backs and unfinished layups at the rim.

I went back and did a little math 2018-19 vs 2019-20. Not anything we didn’t already know but the drop in 2PT% across the board is startling:

2018-19 vs 2019-20:

Vital - 51.4 vs 41.7
Gilbert - 41.8 vs 30.9
Carlton - 60.7 vs 48.7
Polley - 49.4 vs 38.5

Total- 289/561 (51.5%) vs 124/297 (41.8%)

Oof.

edit- also, FYI, the underclassmen are currently 107/203 (52.7%)

edit 2- Adams leads team in 2PT shooting at 25/41 (61%)

I think this supports the theory that the offense has changed from last year, with corresponding results. Four upperclassmen don't all suddenly drop their shooting % by 10%+ unless there is a systemic reason.

The most talented player from last year’s team by a mile isn’t here to distract other teams and our main ball handler hasn’t been a threat for almost the entire season.

Bouknight is the only one who can successfully create for himself on this year’s team, and the half court wasn’t our friend last year either. I don’t think stylistically much has changed, I just think we have a bunch of role players with no standout and nobody is hot right now.

yes. You cannot be running a weave offense 30 feet from the basket with the current set.

Designing an offense around where Carlton catches the ball at the top of the key is not an offense built to his strengths.

this team played well, even without Adams, last year playing 4 out with Carlton’s giant butt on the block using his body to create openings and not forcing post moves.
