Medic had it first (as you would expect) but:

Here it goes... failure to land in the P5 or take a no money offer like SMU potentially keeps UConn out of the permanent tier of the superleague and competing for one of the 10 "promotional" spots.

The current CST outline would create a system that would have the top 70 programs — all members of the five former major conferences, plus Notre Dame and new ACC member SMU — as permanent members and encompass all 130-plus FBS universities.

The perpetual members would be in seven 10-team divisions, joined by an eighth division of teams that would be promoted from the second tier.

The 50-plus second-division teams would have the opportunity to compete their way into the upper division, creating a promotion system similar to the structure in European football leagues. The 70 permanent teams would never be in danger of moving down, while the second division would have the incentive of promotion and relegation.

If this goes through... I guess UConn welcomes life in the second tier.

CST leaders maintain their intentions are pure — and that they are in a hurry to get going. An avalanche of legal activity could dramatically increase the likelihood that their plan or something like it could take hold. Even prior to that day of potential foundational change, CST wants to lead from the front, not behind.

“Speed is our friend,” Gee said. “We don’t have a lot of time to waste.”

This isn’t the European model. Why so scared of competition?

Off the cuff, don't see how the G5 could run schedules which are prepared 5 to 8 years out when every year their are fighting to land into the special zone of 10 which would presumably give then a brand new schedule the following year. Plus, many times a G5 team is much worse the following season after a strong season as players & coaches move on.

This must be the first trial balloon. What's the next idea?

Doodled around a super league of 80 w/o service academies. Tried to minimize the movement within conferences....but had to have some so it seems.

I promoted UConn (of course!), JMU, USF, Memphis, Tulane, Boise St. Colorado St, Washington St. and Oregon St.

I give Florida St a ton of credit in this scenario. They wer able to convince both the B1G and the SEC to take them. I'm guessing they'll have to play split squad games most of the season.

No fair. Florida St. should get to pick one conference, no two.

I have always been opposed to a breakaway, but either way, this is the type of set up realignment is leading to.

Just saw someone just beat me regarding Florida St.

Okay- so I need to add two more promotions because I also doubled up ND as well.

One choice is Liberty- but I expect the schools to collectively conspire to block them.

Seems like no one is worthy. Maybe Coastal Carolina or Georgia St? Maybe Rice or USTA?

The last two for 80 seem pretty weak who ever it is.

The the Power schools can’t be relegated right?

We should riot in the streets if this happens.

I don't see this happening. Assuming all student athletes around the country are going to be paid at least minimum wage going forward and the big schools wanting to stay with the NCAA (due to the liability shield), I could see the powers that be split Division 1 football into three subdivisions. 1-A would have to include some current G5 members to avoid anti-trust lawsuits.

Something like this:
SEC (16)
Big Ten (18)
ACC (17)
Big 12 (16)
MW (11)
AAC (14)
UConn
WSU
OSU
ND
Liberty

97 schools in the top flight. Sankey and co get to shrink D-1A (and take more of the CFP money) without running into anti-trust issues.

D1-AA (16-team playoff)
MAC
Sun Belt
CUSA
Big Sky
CAA
MVFC
SoCon
UAC

D1-AAA (8-team playoff)
SWAC
MEAC
Ivy
Big South-OVC
NEC
Patriot
Pioneer
Southland

The D1-AA and D-1AAA playoffs would have to be smaller playoffs to reduce costs for the NCAA.

I was wondering if we would get one of these in the week before the Final Four, but it is a Thursday, so there has to be a "THE SKY IS FALLING" thread about UConn.

This isn't happening. Not like this. The Big 10 and SEC wouldn't take their calls. Only the ACC met with this group. And you know why, cause it's their last chance to grapple on.

More than USF questions by the Tampa Bay Times...

What happens to Miami, FSU, TCU, Stanford, Cal, Clemson, UConn, Navy, Iowa State, and on and on...

and yet here you are (again)......

Now, regale us with your tale of how you want to transform UConn's athletic department into Seton Hall's.

Memphis
USF
Tulane
either JMU or ODU
either ECU or Charlotte or Coastal
either USTA or Georgia Southern.

Sorry Nevada, UNLV, Fresno St, Wyoming, FAU, UAB, FIU and Rice.

Why would the Big 10 and SEC go for this? So, the P2 would lose their conference identity, most of their rival games, and their financial and perceived advantages vs. the rest of college football. So, a team like Tennessee will play say Wake Forest instead of Florida?

Because it's a bunch of old rich people trying to get more rich before they get more old.

They don't care about the health of the sport long-term. They want more money now.

I don't think anyone that matters is really going for this because there is no reason to break up all the benefits that P2 currently have.

That said, the exercise of sizing a super league is an interesting parlor room discussion that will roll on and on for years to come.
