I remember there was a Syracuse one last year but I can’t remember what time of the year. Any word on any secret scrimmages? I assume since it’s the beginning of the school year it’s mostly conditioning and working out but was wondering if anyone know when last years was and if there’s any news for this year.

Typically they occur not too far before the season, sometime in October, usually.

They are only "secret" because the NCAA requires they be conducted behind closed doors, with no records kept. They also generally give some referees a chance to work / practice. Usually the opponent is fairly local, although I suppose scrimmaging against UConn (and probably having Geno address your team) has some advantages.

The “secret” scrimmage is in lieu of a second exhibition game against Div 2 opponents. It was started to give the team more early competition and also to equalize the number of season ticket games at Gampel and the XL center. It started when UConn rejoined the Big East.

The secret scrimmage is great for the team. The coaches get to evaluate players against another D1 program, try out different combinations and sets, etc. On the other hand, the secret scrimmage is maddening for fans. Other than who the scrimmage was against, fans get little if any information. Geno will give some vague comments about player performance with absolutely no stats whatsoever, no videos, no still photos, nothing, leading to rampant speculation here on the BY….:(

The "secret" scrimmage does not have any fans in attendance, to include the press. That's why it's called a "secret" scrimmage.

Note that a team is allowed to play two "secret scrimmages" - and many do. The only limitation is that teams can't play more than a total of two exhibition games and scrimmages combined.

One reason that the scimmage normally is "fairly local" is that players are not allowed to miss any class time whatsoever to participate.

If UConn played two exhibition games, either Gampel or XL would have one more game in the season ticket package. You must assume I’m either incredibly stupid or totally uninformed; I know what a “secret “ scrimmage is.

Then the way you stated you original post was not put together all that well. The statement in bold makes it sound like you are talking about the "secret" scrimmage equalizing the number of ticket games.

That was exactly what I meant. Two exhibitions would create an odd number of home games; one exhibition and one scrimmage creates an equal number.
