Yes, the portal is open and yes, there is probably some hidden gems but for the bulk of the known talent, it has been dispersed and with that, I want to open up the projections and discussion on the SEC.
To me, the top 4 are still the same-SC, Vandy, Texas and LSU as all either added to their roster or replenished their needs. #5 is Kentucky who has had a pretty good Portal Season combined with some nice HS recruits coming it. I just don't think they can crack the top 4.
After that is where the waters get muddied. Oklahoma lost a lot to graduation and then Zia Vann to Texas so, to me they fall down to the 6-8 range with Ole Miss and Tenn. Both schools lost a considerable amount of talent either to graduation or the portal and both have added nicely via the portal but I just don't think they added enough elite talent to compete with the top 5. I do think they have better talent than the rest of the conference which really isn't saying much but I will defer to others to offer any opions.
There were 3 coaching changes with Georgia 8-8 and Alabama 7-9 losing most of their squads to the portal forcing major rebuilds. Florida 5-11 had talent and probably underachieved with it but lost all of that talent when they changed coaches. This will be a major uphill battle for Tami Reese.
Texas A&M would probably be happy to be rid of Joni Taylor and that albatross of a contract but they are stuck for at least another year. I just don't see that team with any talent to move up. Then there is Missouri and Kelli Jolly Harper whom I happen to like but just don't think she recruits enough elite talent to contend. Next year should be a slight improvement over this year but still in the lower half of the conference.
Miss State seems short on NIL money and any player who shows development leaves for greener pastures. I see another mediocre year for poor Sam.
Auburn and Arkansas will be in year 2 of their rebuilds and I probably like what Auburn is doing a bit more than Arkansas but neither looks especially promising.
Right now top 8 for me are SC, Vandy, Texas, LSU, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Ole Miss. Then Mizzou, MSU, Texas A&M, Auburn, Florida, Arkansas, Georgia and Alabama, but the last 6 are merely lightly educated guesses.
Curious what the current BY thinking is....
