Tell us some guys you pushed all your chips in on as prospects that became studs, or duds.

I’ll start off with a miss to break the ice. I didn’t think Luka was athletic enough, or shot well enough, to be a primary scorer. Completely out on him by the draft. That’s probably my worst miss.

True detective season one before they even started filming.

Wait what?

I have some of the worst NBA draft takes of all time. I thought Oden over KD was the right choice, and when Anthony Bennett was drafted I texted some of my friends ‘I love that pick’.

Although I will say I wanted Tatum over Fultz and Ball. I was convinced he’d be the best NBA player of the 3.

I thought Fultz was gonna be a star.

I thought Curry would be a rotation guy / bench scorer. That's a pretty big miss.

.-.
I’ll skip the easy path with Bouknight and i’ll go with jahlil okafor, marvin bagley, and mo bamba. I didn’t think there was any chance any of those three wouldn’t end up top 10 at their positions.

I’ll one up you here. I thought Yi Jianlian was going to be the best player in that draft

Granted I was 13 at the time, but I was dying on that hill

Great article. I remember the super weird shoulder stuff with him and the Sixers not really having his back at all. But cool to read more depth into him and how he dealt with it.

I was in on Fultz as well, nobody could anticipate the shooting fall off.

Anyone got hits they wanna share?

.-.
I thought Thabeet would be better in pros than college. Still calling Sanogo as Wes Unseld with offense and he will prove it.

the misses are more fun. all the guys i underrated going into the nba:
the two "jays" (tatum & brown)
tre young
jalen brunson
kawhi leonard
joel embiid
maxey
donovan mitchell
tyrese haliburton
giannis
jimmy butler
anthony edwards
SGA
steph/klay/dray
harden
booker

I thought Doug McDermott would be an impact player with his shooting.

Thought when the Knicks traded for Brunson that he’d be a nice player not a build your franchise around guy

Where‘s all the Hurley was not the right choice crowd? I never wavered from my support of Dan Hurley but who among us saw this much success in his future?

When I first set foot on campus in Storrs in the fall of 1989, I was completely oblivious to basketball and the sports world in general...

I remember clearly the reaction when I asked a few guys "Why does that Jordan guy have shoes named after him - is he that good?" The look on their faces...

Not a miss exactly but kinda funny.

Jaylen Brown and Luka are 2 good ones for me, I felt those 2 guys would be problems and they both are.

Funny, Stanley Johnson I’m on board there too, but all those AZ guys! Derrick Williams, SJ, Ayton, I thought they’d all be very good pros.

Bouk is my biggest miss ever. The talent was certainly there, but not the work ethic or focus. I hope he catches on somewhere overseas at a minimum.

I still can’t believe Derrick Williams wasn’t a good pro.

Finally came to me, Jerome Lane. He grabbed every rebound it seemed. I knew he was undersized, I guess it was too much to overcome.

I was living in California when Kidd was in high school and caught a state championship game on tv and this player kept beating everyone down court and making easy layups. He looked like he wasn't really trying that hard, I wondered "why don't they just guard this player"? That was Kidd! I missed how good he was, just thought other guys must be not that good.
I was very lucky... Already a St. Joe's fan, I heard during the summer before his freshman year that they had this incredible point guard coming in.

I saw Jason's first game... Even as a freshman, he was ridiculously dominant. He was a no-doubt-er. So, I saw many, many, many more of his games in person. Should have gone to even more. As it was, I saw him play 70 HS games, and about 10 more at Cal.
