Not crazy really. He was an player then assistant there. The extension seems to include this year and he would have to majorly crap the bed to be fired after this year with the number of big time recruits he already has coming in 24. That's two years.

The year after they probably don't want a new recruiter for Boozer's kids. And there we are, halfway through his extension.

No, it's pretty stupid. Look at how it typically goes down replacing a legend when you go in house with someone who is unproven as a head coach.

Perhaps, but that falls on the initial decision IMO not on the extension. They may be digging further but it's negligible in it's stupidity compared to the initial hire. That is probably the difference of our opinion on the subject.

He did win the ACC tournament guys.

Not exactly a NC, but he accomplished something still.

Win one ACC tourney get a six-year extension? Duke obviously felt like he needs this extension to succeed. It' a vote of confidence, and we know how those usually work out especially now that Vitale is not in a position to recruit for the Devils.

Exactly. There was no need to make this move so quickly. He wasn't going anywhere, and hasn't accomplished enough to warrant it. He has however shown that he can recruit, but the Duke brand has a lot to do with that.

No, it falls on the extension. They might believe they hired the greatest basketball coach who ever blew a whistle. They still really have no idea what they have and there isn't any market for him to be pulled away from them. His price tag gets a little higher if he wins it all next year but even if that happens he isn't going anywhere.

If you have money to burn it doesn't matter but again no reason to sign him because you know he's not going anywhere. Only way he moves is if he flames out and then you're on the hook.

If his teams simply underperform, there could be rumblings of regret. But, they'll be reluctant to fire him because of that contract. Legends are often followed by sacrificial lambs. Lamb just got very expensive in Durham.

Maybe he'll prove me wrong but I'd consider that a win for every program not named Duke

Not much risk on Duke's part because he has top shelf talent to work with that ensures some. success. How bad an they be with that lineup?

Six more years of NCAA Tournament mediocrity for Dook - IF he lasts the 6 years

Premature extension. Unproven whether he is great at talent evaluation and player development. Just bad management on the part of Duke AD and Prez.

It's probably that they think a sign of commitment to Scheyer from the university will help with recruiting. A university letting a coach's contract come close to expiration was always treated as an opportunity for negative recruiting and a sign that the university didn't believe in the coach. Given that there are valid questions about Scheyer as a coach, I think they're doing what they can to help Scheyer succeed.

When was his contract expiring?

Unless the players come to dislike him or dislike their teammates or have chemistry problems or any off court issues, hard to not be successful with top shelf talent.

Though, Calipari has had a way of underperforming with the talent he has had.

Duke seems to not have recruited those type of players as far as I can remember. Even Kyrie wasn't that way when he played there.

But, two consecutive number 1 recruiting classes is nothing to sneeze at.

How can you tell what the 2028 lineup is going to look like? Do you have one of those sports almanacs from the future like Biff Tannen? The whole point is we don’t know if this guy is going be able to prove himself and keep hauling in these types of classes. Coattails can only be ridden for so long.

You see Duke becoming an average recruiter? Look, I don't know who they're getting in 2028 but I do predict with that hoop legacy, academic prominence and amazing campus they will get great players whether for Scheyer or who comes after.
