It probably has something to do with who played late or early the previous day, but can someone explain why a prime time matchup like UConn/SU was on at mid day. Hopefully it was not a screw up by the BE brain trust.

It's how the schedule has always been. The 9/16 and 12/13 games are during the day, so then the 8/9 and 5/12 games are during the day, so then the 1/8 and 4/5 games are during the day.

It just makes it so that each team has about the same amount of rest (~24 hours).

Thanks, I thought that was the case but with the Providence mensa corp you never know.

The 1 seed has always had the earliest quarterfinal (think back to us struggling in the noon game with Seton Hall in 1999). It's considered a slight competitive advantage to be able to get the game done early, get a little more rest, and scout your opponent. Not a huge benefit, but just enough that way back when, the thought was that if there was any benefit to be had, then the top seed deserved it.

Generally speaking, the 1 v. 8/9 is a less competitive game than 4 v. 5, just like the 9/16 is less competitive than the 12/13, in theory. Just happens this year (and last) that 9 seed (UConn) is loaded with talent, and can play with any team in the league. It's been like this schedule for 30 years.
