Sanogo's the star, but Clingan's paint protection changed the game

1000% agree. Clingan is the bogeyman down there. I’ve said it recently, but I haven’t seen a big man with Adama’s level of footwork and patience in a long time. Kid is just special.

And a billion kudos to Hurley and the staff for changing up the way we posted Adama up during our rough stretch, nothing is forced anymore.

SWEET 16 BABY!!! WHERE WE BELONG, KEEP IT GOING BOYS!

The killer run didn't happen until we started getting stops, and man did we string together some stops in the middle of the second half as soon as Clingan came on. Kid's got unreal defensive awareness.

Let's go win 4 more.
Yes, this is the only issue with Hurley. He doesn’t play Clignan more when teams get to the rim at will with Sanogo. Clingan is a man among boys.

We will need his paint presence against Arkansas because their guards and entire team live at the rim

Pumped. S16 was the expectation after PK. Now it’s to win it all

There’s really been no reason to alter Sanogo’s minutes in these 2 games. He’s been the best player in the tournament and he’s averaging 26 mpg.

I hear you but it’s a really tricky situation for him and I think he’s actually gotten better with it. Sanogo is an offensive machine and has averaged 26 and 10 through 2 tourney games.

It’s not his offense. It’s the defense. Teams aren’t afraid of getting to the rim. St. Mary’s wasn’t. Clignan is in for defense and rebounding. Sanogo is an animal on offense

The stats just don't show it with him. He was my player of the game, he was so impactful he changed the entire game. It went from rim run after rim run for St. Mary's to the entire paint being shut down for them. Only credited with 3 blocks and and 5 rebounds but he shut everything down and it got us out running and making shots.

He has the Thabeet stat column that’s not in the stat sheet

very much so. Sanogo keeps UConn in the game in the first half. Clingan turns the tide and the Sanogo comes back in to deliver the kill.

Their gameplan was a good one. Use our hugging of shooters and helping the roll man to get 1v1 drives into the paint. Take advantage of Sanogo's below average rim protection.

Clingan trivialized that, and the blocks/altered shots staying in court led to transition.

Adama Sanogo has been the best player in the tournament. 28 and 13. Followed by 24 and 8.

Just two dominating performances.

This team just needs a few players to step up in a few key spots — like Jordan hitting those second half threes — and this team can beat anyone in the field.

We have that player that is the difference maker in every game.

Teams getting to the rim at will when sanogo in is a bit of a problem. I get he’s not a rim protector but it was like a layup line.
Clingan played great in the 2nd half and we extended the lead, but Sanogo checked in with 7:35 to go and St Mary's made 1 FG the rest of the game. After that rough 3 minute stretch to start the 2nd half both bigs played great defense

His help defense lacks, but 1on 1 in the paint no one can back him down. That’s a valuable asset as well.
That's why he matched up so well with Mitchell Saxon. Saxon is a good player, trust me. But he doesn't shoot far away from the basket and he uses muscle and strength to make his impact and, well, he ain't moving Sanogo.
