I thought you might like to look at a 6min 39sec YouTube highlight video of Saniya Chong’s game against Archbishop Molloy on 12/18/2011…….Saniya is #12. She scored 54 pts!

Notice how comfortable she is using her off (left) hand…..very rare. I’ve seen Saniya play live twice (when Shea and Marisa were there). She’s quite an amazing player….enjoy!

PS: Make sure you expand the video to "full screen" so you don't miss any of the fine details.

Ah, but we do. Her freshman year would be the last for four current Huskies. Need a a few kids from the 2013 class at least. :)

I see Bria Hartley.
I see similarities also.. But IIRC Bria was playing in a very high level AAU situation, and I think Saniya is not. Plus Bria was playing at high visibility camps, etc. So even if her HS competition level is similar to Bria's, it may not be reasonable to expect Saniya to have the kind of impact Bria has had, regardless of where she attends college.

She is really terrific. Quick release, deep range, dribbles with her head up, great penetrator, knows how to pick and roll, very quick, sees the court well, good help defense. Did I leave anything out? LOL There was one player at UConn who always got the offense going . Many said she was a coach on the floor. She got her team mates involved. Bria does that too and when a shot was needed to be made she made it. That girl was Diana. There arent to many players that know how to keep their team mates involved with the flow of the offense. Bria does it, at the HS level Saniya does it the greatest was Diana.

I was just talking style. Not impact.

Obviously, her scoring gets attention, but I think her assists are very impressive, and may be what gets her attention from UConn.

She looks great, and as others have said she has a wonderful sense of the game and awareness of her teammates. The unknown to me is the level of competition, but Geno gets paid the big bucks to figure that one out - and somehow I think he knows more about evaluating players than I do.

She can score, yes! It's her passing that impresses me the most. Good defense too. I like her game. Still interested to see where Hoopgurlz ranks her when they come out with top 100.

I got curious and found a 15 minute interview of Saniya and her coach by Bob Wolf as part of some Con Edison "player of the week" promotion.

Some items discussed:
  • Saniya apparently has as many as 100 offers.
  • Her coach said "Everyone tells her she will play right away."
  • She has seen Louisville vs. Rutgers. Louisville has sent her some photo with photo-shop doctoring that has her in a Louisville uniform. Rutgers told her she is the vital last piece of some championship puzzle.
  • Virginia Tech (aware of the intense recruiting of Saniya) told her "Give your mailman a break, commit to Va. Tech."
  • She says she is 5'9"
  • Ossining has a young team (no seniors) including a 7th grader who comes off the bench.
  • Apparently Ossining players play as an AAU team together.
I am reciting all this from memory. Sorry, but I am too technically challenged to do links.

One last point. The impression that some had that Saniya was a relatively "unknown" talent is totally false. The competition by wcbb schools to sign her is very keen and comprises dozens of schools.

I see Bria Hartley.
I see her as a compilation of skills personified by other players.

Passing down court - Kelly Faris and Payton Manning
Passes into the post - Kelly Faris
Steals - Kelly Faris
Assists - Kelly Faris and Bria Hartley
3pter. accuracy - Sue Bird
3pter. volume - Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis
Pull up duece - Bria Hartley and Kalana Greene
Drives to the hoop (with a touch of the headlong dash) - Bria Hartley and Tiffany Hayes
Defense - Bria Hartley
Free throws - Stef Dolson
Rebounding - Bria Hartley and Tiffany Hayes
Dribbling - Bria Hatley and Kelly Faris (Are those Bob Cousyish arms?)
Bring the ball up, the heck with calling the play, just drive to the hoop - Brianna Banks
Stoic demeanor - Kelly Faris
3pt. range - US Army 60mm M224 Lightweight Company Mortar System
Best ever post 30+ foot 3pter. dance - Coach Dan Ricci (Talk about light footed! Put him on Dancing with the Stars! The man rocks!)
Just listened to the Bob Wolf interview. She is a very modest centered kid.

"Rutgers told her she is the vital last piece of some championship puzzle."

Vital, yes. Last piece....... that's a joke, right?

I didn't hear it that way. Coach just said they sent her a photo off the internet of her celebrating a sectional championship and said "Congratulations."

I got interested in your description because use of a "personalized recruiting aid" such as a personalized jersey would be an NCAA violation if arranged during an player's official (By-Law 13.6.7.9) or unofficial (13.7.3) visit.

(This is known around here, for convenience only of course, as the Tennessee Rule, since it was adopted after that fine institution's unusually exuberant attempts to recruit Ann Strother.)

Not only are such things a no-no on visits, but use by a school of a player's photo in a computerized presentation or a website posting is also prohibited (By-Law 13.4.2.4).

But aha, I thought, that Wile E. Walz has skirted these rules by sending Ms. Chong a Biffed-up photo by snail mail, taking his chances that it gets there before her senior year.

Alas, my admiration for him as a rising young rule-bender of a coach remains to be established.

But not my admiration for you, Kibby. Leave it to you to think up imaginative personalized recruiting aids. Always one step ahead of the panting gendarmes, and with an imagination so vivid you take it for reality.

That's a visionary for you. Less talented rule benders can only stare in wonder at your groundbreaking awesomeness.

[Explanatory note to newcomers: Kibitzer was a Pulitzer Prize-winning author of limericks personalized to recruits that somehow found their way onto cardboard signs that somehow found their way into the field of vision of the said recruits when they attended UConn games.

He was moving from limericks to sonnets in iambic pentameter when a certain rival school, apparently jealous of his improvement on their rather clunky use of baby pictures, or envious of his poetic talent, or of his ability to write at all, complained. No violation by UConn was found, but Kibitzer's literary concentration was sufficiently disturbed that he decided to retire to the status of card bard emeritus.]

Great job 'discovering' this special young lady. Attaboys are swell, but I hope you're in the process of negotiating a handsome finders fee with management! ;)

So basically she's Kelly Faris, minus a few percent in defense and rebounding but plus 50% more shooting accuracy. There's no way Geno would want this girl.

I know I'm getting WAY ahead of things...but it's mind-numbing to imagine having the lethality (both offensively & defensively) of a guard contingent of Bria, Brianna, Moriah and Saniya on board in 2014! I'd have thrown in Special-K as well, but I really see her more as the Maya prototypical (3-4) forward that has a guard-like handle! :)

Just imagine the type of pressing we'll be doing with that crew of assassins and two uber athletic bigs (Kiah & Breanna) to backstop that press!

I see Bria Hartley.
Bria has a legitimate jump shot. Saniya will have to develop one or she will nto be a scorer at this level. She shoots from her chin. But I like eveything else.
