San Diego State turned down the Big 12 according to a story that came out today.

“With anything you look at, you have to do the financial calculus of does it make sense?” said Wicker, SDSU’s athletic director. “It’s like with the Big 12. The Big 12 wanted us to come in at basically a half-share with no opportunity to make any money in the new TV deal that they just started. Why would we do that? We would have been sitting at the bottom of the league looking up, with no opportunity to do anything.

“We have a great opportunity in the Mountain West to make the College Football Playoff. We’ve already shown we can play in the national title game (in men’s basketball) and we were one win away from the (softball) College World Series. So yeah, financially it has to work.”

Monty has a video about it. He says that SDSU would have made $15 million more in the Big 12. Apparently SDSU went back to the PAC 12 to try to get in. That didn't work out when the PAC 12 collapsed.

In hindsight it looks like a horrible decision, but they were obviously a much better fit in the Pac and no one thought that conference would fully capitulate. There were always whispers of Washington and Oregon joining the B1G, but not much noise about anyone else potentially leaving.

They won’t be a P5. But basically a de facto P5. The highest ranked G5 will likely come out of that conference more often than not.

There might be an opening somewhere for UConn to slide into a football only arrangement that isn’t MAC/CUSA.

The Big 12 if it ever happens won’t happen for a loooong time.

And the ACC probably isn’t going to get picked apart anytime soon. I could be wrong about that.
