He's never going to be a 260lb bruiser and maintain the attributes that make him the player we gave a scholarship to. But Samson at 208lbs like last season couldn't hold his own--if he can get himself up to 225 or 230lbs for next season it would make a world of difference in his rebounding and cutting down his foul rate.

Any little bit helps. I think he'll have a great season.
 
Awesome to see Samson showing some moves other than the dunk/lob. If he can diversify his offensive game and learn to stay on the floor as a rim protector and shot blocker. We're going to be a tough out in the FF
 
Since the UConn preview has yet to drop, here’s my bit about Samson:

Whether it was Donovan Clingan developing under Adama Sanogo or Samson Johnson being the spark off the bench alongside Clingan, the bedrock of UConn’s most recent championship teams have been a one-two punch at the center position and this upcoming season is no exception.

While an essential bench piece in last year’s championship season, many forget that Samson Johnson started his sophomore year as the team’s starting power forward, but a foot injury suffered in the season’s opener allowed Alex Karaban to step into the starting lineup and secure his spot as one of the team’s most important players across the last two seasons.

Playing every game last season, Samson Johnson, with his electric rim-running athleticism and comfort in transition, excelled as a sharp contrast to Donovan Clingan’s classic post game. A low-usage big in half-court sets, Johnson’s above-the-rim hops inspired various sets to get him open looks on lob plays while his dexterity and soft hands helped Johnson finish last season with the second best 2P% in the Big East (69%). To take the next step in his development, Johnson will need to continue to gain strength in one-to-one low post defensive situation and also start developing the perimeter game he was able to show off at his time at the Patrick School.

Being able to occasionally take his man from the top and make some layups through contact would make him a dangerous offensive player. He might need to make strides of this kind to be the starting center.

Agreed. Even though it’s a few clips from practice, what he did looks fluid. Last year he looked lost with the ball if he wasn’t rolling to the rim. Hoping he improves greatly. He needs to fix the mental errors. If he continues to improve he and Reed will be a formidable duo.
 
Nothing new in the vid, per se. We know what he brings, but I would like to see some outside jump shots away from the basket. I know jump shots (not a runner) are not in his weaponry but I am hoping that changes this year.

Couldn't agree more. I think that SJ will have more of an impact than Hilton. He already did last year. But the progression NBA wise is eerily similar.

they don't want him shooting jumpers. he's a vertical spacer that makes his man have to guard the lob which opens up space to operate for others. it's just imposing a dilemma and he does that with the speed and vertical athleticism
 
He also showed some good passing chops this year in spots.

Someone remind me, does he have 2 years left?

Maybe, but starting and finishing on that break was pretty impressive. It's always a pleasure to see bigs aggressively running the floor.
 
love that even a positive Samson post contains people still spewing the limits to his game. He will be drafted next year based on this years play. Alot of you will still figure a way to complain about his fouling lol

He has deficits in his game, but his plusses are off the chart. This year people will see, and be suprised.

His high hedge in tournament was better than the wrench. Raftery saw it

He's not gonna be taking alot of face up outside shots, just like Clingan, because he services the offense being run as screener, distributor (not to say SJ's form looks good or that he can shoot as well as DC could from 3)

Shy foreign kids (think Kenton Facey) need alot of time for their confidence/minutes to pay off

If he can finish consistently around the rim off a dribble / post move like he was showing here (in addition to his open dunks) it would be a huge addition to his offensive arsenal. Having the ability to dump the ball into the post to him and being a legit scoring threat with his back to the basket will really make defenses make tough choices.

The thing I saw in this highlight video that I was most excited about was his demeanor. He has a look of “purpose” and none of that head “hang down” apologetic look. A confident Samson is critical.

Also loved his spin moves and how he schooled Reed Jr.
