Rutgers? Rutgers? Man you're talking about Rutgers

Hating is unbecoming. They have marketed the out of their mediocre product. We have sat on our hands with two of the premier basketball programs in the country. Someone in the AD should have called yourmarkettingsucks.com a long time ago.

Rutgers facts from the Big Ten website:

  • Five national championships in four sports
  • Football (1): 1869
  • Men’s Lacrosse (2): 1928, 1955
  • Men’s Fencing (1): 1949
  • Women’s Basketball (1): 1982
Seriously?

I remember reading about the fencing championship. Apparently their sudden and unexpected decision to go 'split rail' carried the day.

They didn't do sh it accept build a university within shouting distance of the largest base of television sets in the united states. We could have hired the greatest marketing firm in the history of the world and UCONN would never have been invited to the BIG10 before Rutgers because of the expected future revenues they will generate for the Big10 Network. These claims that there is anything our athletic department could have done to do get us a bid is silly. Could they have done a better marketing job, sure, but it wouldn't have done a single thing to help us in conference realignment.

Absolutely comical. Claiming a football national championship when two schools were playing the sport and the season was two games. Only Schianoville could claim that. WTF?
Rutgers Princeton was not not a football game it was a soccer game.
It wasn't even a rugby game.(football decended from rugby not soccer)
Football was invented by Walter Camp when still a Yale student.
He also coined the phrase All- American
He added 4 downs and a movable line of scrimmage to rugby (does this sound familiar)
(Yale is in Connecticut).
Yale was the first power in football winning many unoffical national titles.
They were so supported by the state they built a 70,000 seat stadium.
So Connecticut dosn't take a back seat to anyone regarding football tradition.
That being said Rutgers was a good choice because its the only School in New Jersey playing big time football
New Jersey has 9,000,000 people without even considering the New York City.
The largest untapped market in the country. I believe they can be a force in the B1G.
I wish them luck.
I also believe there are good reasons for the B1G to give UCONN a real good look
Although its a smaller market 3,600,000 in such a small area make a metropolis all by itself.
Its bigger than Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and compactness and lack of any competition make it comparable in size to current B1G or B12 teams.
You can drive to the Rent within 1 1/2 hours from anywhere in the state.
Access by air through New York, Providence, Hartford or even Boston.
Compare this to Lincoln, Iowa City, Madison,State College or even Columbus.
As football is more than just game day for traveling fans it could be one of the best destinations in the B1G.
You could visit NYC , Boston, The Casinos, Newport or any New England state and still be there for the game.
Even in cold weather the cities are great and skiers would love the trip.
Because of this we could sell ourselves as New Englands Team as the revenue would be regional.
All of New England is pretty much one western state. Thats anothe 5,000,000 eyeballs.
New York and Boston are home for many Alum who could easily get to a Game.
Connecticut to the B1G would destroy the northern advance of the ACC and possibly the conference itself.
Instead of Crying or lamenting the good fortune of Rutgers we should be selling ourself
By the way we could play Rutgers in Yankee Stadium every year for the The Tri-State Trophy.
Traditions have to start somewhere. Its time to bring big time football back where it all begin.

So Rutgers didn't play in the first football game? The rest of the world...including both the NFL and the college football Halls of Fame disagree with you. But I'm sure you're right and everyone else is wrong.

Eyes wide open people. I spent 4 years in Storrs and grew up 30 minutes away. I love the place and would be very happy if my daughter chose it as well. Being a "Big Ten" school isn't better than not being a Big Ten school, just different. But Rutgers looks like the other Big Ten schools and UConn doesn't. We look a lot more like the ACC schools.
Last I checked, Penn State is in the middle of nowhere. Same with Illinois. And Indiana. And Purdue. And Iowa. And Nebraska.

See the whole Rutgers thing doesn't bother me. Good for them. Have fun. I never saw them as a real rival. Just one forced on us and them. My main focus is on Louisville. It's time to beat them out and secure a spot out of here. They can go to the Big-12, we wont get a sniff. So goodbye Rutgers and stay sway Louisville.

It's kinda cute that they think they matter now.
Dude, they're in the Big10 and were standing on the corner holding our sacks. Im not sure we are in a position to belittle them at this point.

it's kind of cute that RU will be making north of 35mm a year once the Big Ten negotiates the new TV rights in a few years...and you think you're being funny putting Rutgers down, all the while hoping like hell you'll get an invite to the soon to be second tier ACC.

Now that's adorable.

The first rugby-style game of football here at the college level was Harvard vs McGill in 1874.

I knew about the Havard McGill game.(Some might say I was in attendence)
Both events regardless of rules contributed to intercollegiate sports and the history of Football
But with the innovations made by Walter Camp of New Britain Connecticut The Kicking game(Soccer) and Running game (Rugby) became American Football. You are right to say American football is a direct decendant of Rugby.
A friend of mine after watching his first Rugby Match described it as unorganzied football.
Camp it the man that did the Organzation
Camp is the father of the sport and was acknoledged as such by a Harpers piece in 1888
Legends contrary to fact are abundant everywhere even in sports.
Your free to believe the legend however some of us including most actual sports historians are interested in facts.
Do the research yourself and make a decision based on the facts.
other Camp inovations
:reducing the players from 15 to 11
Marking the field hence the gridiron'
Giving two points for a safety
This guy was a visionary and without him who knows what direction the sport might have gone.
PS The NFL didn't even exist until the 1920's
Another 30 years before it became the force it is today.
thats 50 to 80 years after the college kids made the sport popular.
Its adaptivity to TV made Pro football the top sport in the US.
.
The NFL played their games on Sunday to avoid competition with the local High School game on Saturday

Your favorite team/I am assuming alma mater just got an invite to the B1G and your reaction is to come to a UConn board and talk ?

I am glad we matter so much to you.

I am well aware of the history of the NFL. It was originally a conglomerate of the best teams from professional leagues around the Great Lakes. College football was the national pastime until Babe Ruth came along.

Being located in a desirable market isn't actually an achievement, no matter what BS rhetoric you get from the big 10 and school higher-ups.

But enjoy all that money! Im sure they'll send you a check.
