Rutgers @ Maryland (4) - 12/31/18

And that's the nail in the coffin. Stasha Carey with a steal and then, even though she blows the fast-break layup, she ends up getting fouled and then makes both free throws. Rutgers up by 8 now.

Seems like Carey has been around for years.

Maryland loses 1st conference game at home. Rankings really are a crap shoot until conference play begins in the Power 5 leagues.

This is just a huge win for Rutgers. This could be their ticket to an NCAA tournament bid, as long as they don't collapse down the stretch as they did last year.

Maryland, well, it's safe to say they're not the fourth-best team in the country.

What stands out in looking at the Box Score is the Off. Rebounding of Rutgers. 19 to 8. I thought MD was supposed to be among the leaders in rebounding.

Rutgers wasn't having any of this talk about how "Maryland was going to win and win BIG." That is what some of he Big Ten folks were saying about this game. Grit and Grind, Rutgers. Well done.

I would bet when people thought about the undefeated teams and who would be able to "run the table" ... MD vs. Rutgers Was NOT on anyone's list of possible stumbles for the Terps. One Less Undefeated Team. of course as some might say... "a loss to Rutgers could be the best thing that could happen for MD".... as if a loss is ever a good thing!

I think it was Big Ten Network commentator Vera Jones who said she thought Maryland would run the table in the Big Ten. Let's just say the softness of Maryland's OOC schedule is showing. They survived a scare against a weak Penn State team and trailed almost the entire game vs. Rutgers.

But I give Rutgers lots of credit. You could see in their body language they *believed* from the opening tip they could win this game.

Double header on BTN today.

Nebraska at Ohio State 1PM
Illinois at North Western 3PM

Ohio State leads 44-38 6' + left in Q3.

It all depends on the non-conference schedule. Maryland always plays a very weak schedule and the voters rarely factor that in. This year Maryland has no wins against top 20 teams... no USCe is not a top 20 team.

The conference schedule is very weak too. However, the voters will just look at their record and they will remain highly ranked, without justification .

Ciani Cryor didn't shoot efficiently, but she finished with 12 points, an amazing 11 assists, and 3 steals (edit: in addition to 9 rebounds, wow!). She never let the Maryland guards get comfortable handling the ball. And she assisted on almost half of Rutgers' made buckets (25). Stasha Carey was also huge with 18 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals.

Gotta give the game ball, however, to Rutgers freshman Noga Peleg Pelc, who came off the bench in 4Q with 8 quick points at a time when Rutgers' offense appeared to have ground to a halt.

Ciani Cryor was a rebound short of a triple double. 12 pts, 11 asts, 9 reb. My daughters team beat a loaded Neumann Goretti in the state championship, led by Ciani Cryor (GaTech), Emanuella Awobajo (Boston College), Felicia Aiyotean (Virginia), Olamide Aborawa (Texas), and Sianni Martin and AJ Timbers (a pair of Towson recruits). Boy was it a great game.

Vera Jones is far from reliable when it comes to Big Ten women's hoop analysis or predictions. On Thursday during halftime of a game she praised Iowa and said they had the best chance of challenging Maryland in the Big Ten; she also described the good attributes of Minnesota. She did not utter a single word about Michigan State, who promptly went out and beat Iowa by 14 just 2 days later. (now up to a #15 ranking)

Rutgers with a veritable offensive explosion :) in the first 5 minutes of the game, leading 14-11 at the first media TO.

Enjoy it while it lasts because it won't last.
Uhh, do you want to repeat that last sentence?

I watched Rutgers quite a bit last year, and Cryor was a tremendous defensive player but seemed very limited offensively. This was by far the best game I've seen her have.

I was there. What stood out from the stats was Rutgers took 17 more shots than Maryland. What stood out from being there was Maryland being very slow in the backcourt. Rutgers literally got every 50-50 ball in the game. I'm sure your board would love this but Brenda really got outcoached this afternoon.

Brenda has been outcoached for 10+ years. Everyone knows Walz won the National Championship. Frese is just a great recruiter , cannot coach.
