Rutgers @ Maryland (4) - 12/31/18

Double header on BTN today.

Nebraska at Ohio State 1PM
Illinois at North Western 3PM

Also in Big Ten action, #12 Minnesota @ Michigan will be the Gophers' toughest road test of the season so far. When Minn played @ Boston College on Dec. 9, BC actually led in the 4th quarter before Minn pulled it out down the stretch.

Rutgers with a veritable offensive explosion :) in the first 5 minutes of the game, leading 14-11 at the first media TO.

Enjoy it while it lasts because it won't last.

The pace of the game is heavily in Maryland's favor, but Rutgers is still ahead 28-24 at end of 1Q. I've never seen Rutgers hit this many 3-pointers (5) in a single quarter.

.-.
Rutger’s Ciani Cryor already has 6 assists.
She's having herself a game. Charise Wilson already has 10 points and Stasha Carey has 8 off the bench.

I have to give Rutgers credit; they are playing with no fear whatsoever.

Seeing Maryland struggle against Penn State for 3 quarters and now trailing at home vs. Rutgers, it's hard to believe they'll go 18 games of Big Ten play without tripping up.

I don't think Maryland is really a top-5 team at this point, but watch out for them next year. Their only loss to graduation will be Brianna Fraser, who's not even starting for them this year. Charles, Jones and Watson will be seniors, and I think Shakira Austin could be an All-American as a sophomore. Taylor Mikesell has also been really impressive as a freshman.

When you consider that the other top teams will suffer more significant losses to graduation (ND's 4 seniors, Lou and Pheesa, Durr, Brown, McCowan, etc.), 2019-20 could be a great year for Maryland.

Yikes... half way through 3rd Quarter, Rutgers leads 43 - 39.... FIVE points scored combined by both teams in half of this quarter (5 minutes).... Rutgers 2 points, Maryland 3 points.

I don’t what happened in the first quarter, but what you describe is typical of Rutgers games.

Both teams have cooled off. After starting out 5 of 8 from the arc, Rutgers is now 6 of 18. Sierra Calhoun (transfer from Ohio State) is 1 of 7.

All Tied at 47 at the end of 3 quarters. Real defensive struggle there in the 3rd???

.-.
Guirantes broke a Rutgers scoring drought to re-tie the game at 49 and then Fraser just picked up her 4th foul.

Wow. Rutgers has a freshman from Israel named Noga Peleg Pelc, who just came in and a hit a 3-pointer, a long 2-point jumper and then another 3. She gives Rutgers a 57-53 lead with about 5:30 left and forces Brenda to call a timeout.

Rutgers isn't folding quite as fast as Penn State did.

Rutgers living by the three. Still lead by 4.
Jenkins fouled for Rutgers. Oh oh....

Whoa. Rutgers botched a fast-break advantage but then Maryland missed two wide-open 3s by their best shooters (Watson and Mikesell). Rutgers is up by 6 with 2 minutes left.

Maryland turned the ball over and then was forced to foul. Cryor sinks 2 FTs with 32 seconds on the clock to put Rutgers back up by 6.

Maryland needs a quick score and a turnover to get back in this one.

.-.
And that's the nail in the coffin. Stasha Carey with a steal and then, even though she blows the fast-break layup, she ends up getting fouled and then makes both free throws. Rutgers up by 8 now.

Seems like Carey has been around for years.

Maryland loses 1st conference game at home. Rankings really are a crap shoot until conference play begins in the Power 5 leagues.
