Rumor: ND Olympics to ACC, partial independence football

I don't see what is in this for ND other than getting away from the NNBE and access to the ACC bowl games.

ACC (FSU, Clemson, Miami, and VT) get semi-regular FB games against ND.

It seems like a weird deal to make or an incomplete one.

Though many will continue to skoff, it is about associations. ND is a highly regarded institution. It does not want to be associated with Memphis, Houston etc. I don't blame them. I don't want UConn to be either.

If you look at the worst academic insititutions in the "big 6" conferrences, the Big East dominates. With Syracuse and Pitt gone, UConn, Rutgers and Georgetown stand almost alone (SMU if you consider them in the BE at this stage). The worst school in the ACC would be well above average in the NBE.

The power of propoganda upstater. All you can do is point people in the right direction, and nudge them a bit, the human brain is an information sponge, and it soaks up whatever the individual lets it soak up, and individuals don't like to go against the grain of the group, and what they've been told is 'right'. It takes a high level of training in teh ability to process information, and ask and answer questions - to not be influenced by propoganda.

Perhaps nobody truly cares about academics in the sports world, but the athletic conferences exist outside of sports, as marketing engines for the university. That's why they exist. As revenue engines very few truly make money after you take out the expenses and non revenue sports. So the press release proves the point. They barely even mention athletics, its all about the fit, the like-mindedness of the other schools, the academics. Regardless of what happens with student athletes (see: Harvard's problems), UNC and other ACC schools retain strong academic reputations. That's what is of value to ND in this deal and why it is prominent in the release. When people say "Ivy League" nobody thinks of sports.

Yes, there are exceptions like Rice, which would jump to a more prestigious conference istantly if asked. Berkeley and UCLA maintain reputations just above the other Cals for a reason. Look at every single recent move. Every school has gone from an academically inferior conference to a superior one. Every single school (and yes the SEC rates higher than the Big XII). I'm not suggesting, for example, that being in the Pac Ten changes anything for academics at Colorado, and especially not for athletes, but the perception of the university went up a notch.

Can't disagree with this more. Berkeley and UCLA maintain reps, yes, but UCSD is right there with both of them. Little to do with their affiliation with Arizona St. Athletic conferences aren't marketing engines. Sports are marketing engines. There's a big difference there. The press release, by the way, proves nothing. ND doesn't even fit into the ACC, and I suspect we'll be hearing about that in the future since ND shows no compunction about leaving people high and dry.

ND is looking at this from the perspective of athletics, and they made the absolute right decision.

Look at the top 50 USNWP academically, and you'll see very few schools that made their rep on sports.
