Rudy (big) Gay (guy) to the Warriors...

Nice place to come off the bench if makes the roster....despite what Majerus said, Gay's had a great NBA career:

How did that video not get a like? I still laugh every time I see it.

I think Haslem and Anthony retired. Garrett Temple I have never heard of. Some of these players age changed (+1) since this list was generated.

kinda wild that he never won a playoff series, Memphis blew a big lead in game 1 vs the Clippers in 2012 and then lost the series in 7 games, and then the Spurs had a great chance to go up 2-0 on the road to open up the series 2019 series vs the Nuggets and then blew game 2 and ultimately lost in 7 games.

Temple is basically another KO in the NBA, he's around as a steady, lockerroom guy. It seems like a lifetime ago but he was on that LSU team with Big Baby and Tyrus Thomas that made the Final Four, and they lost to UConn that year in the regular season.

Rudy was a First-Team All-American his Sophomore year. I don't know how much more we could've expected.
I understand and kinda agree with hoops point. He had a world of talent but I thought he settled too much with a 3 point shot instead of being more assertive and taking it to the hole.

He has quietly had an incredible career. He left us in 2006, right? 17+ year NBA career. Almost 200 million career earnings. Not bad at all.
He's made a ton of money and played an incredibly long time but he never made the jump in his play. He's on my list of all time "what should've beens." If you created in a lab what an NBA superstar looks like it would be Rudy Gay.

Rudy’s problem was the high expectations for him were never quite achieved . Maybe they were too high. He certainly wasn’t a bust but expectations in college were a NC and in the NBA a franchise player and a foundation for a multiple winning teams. and minimally a conference title .

This is where I am. High end career, tons of money, but left a hall of fame type career on the table.

He was a blast in old 2ks.

Player of the Year good and a player who can carry a team to a 'chip good.

He was a bit long and lanky in college and some of those 6'4" 210 lbs small forwards could get inside his grill and keep him from getting any momentum driving to the basket. He didn't have a tight handle and teams with smaller small forwards or three guard offenses would just get in his chest.

Another year, he learns a hedge or fake or tightens his dribble and he's having an incredible junior season.

He's top 5 in almost every NBA category for UConn alums

He would have been a monster if Calhoun were ahead of the times and played a 3-guard offense with Gay at the 4 instead of the 1990s style lineup with 2 bigs and Gay at the wing. He would have been a rich man's Deandre Daniels instead of an awkward and sometimes ineffective, but taller, Rip Hamilton.

He averaged 15 pts per game his sophomore year. He would have definitely gone for 20 or more his Junior year. He relied on his jumper too much and he wasn’t a great shooter. If he had bulked up a bit in college, attacked the rim more and improved from outside a little bit, he’d have been a beast. Putting size, strength and talent all together into a great great product, generally happens for most guys their Junior year. He isn’t remembered like Ray, Rip, Emeka, Ben, Kemba etc. because he didn’t have that game changing evolution while at UConn.

His teams losing earlier than expected in the NCAA Tournament is also an issue for many. What if they won the championship in 2006? How would that have changed how people perceived Rudy?

It certainly would have helped, but if that happened it would have been because Rudy raised his game.

Part of the reason he only averaged 15 a game is that there were 4 other players off that team that were drafted that year.

I don't otherwise disagree with your point -- but, as has been pointed out earlier in this thread, Rudy never seemed to possess the unquenchable hunger to win or be the best. He was happy with very good. This was true both in college and the NBA. Would he have put up monster stats if returned in 2007? Of course. It would've been him and a bunch of freshmen for the most part. Would that team have been any good? Probably not. 2007 was a rough season in any event, adding Rudy would've been made them a lot better -- but he wasn't carrying them to a championship a la Shabazz or Kemba.
FWIW, I was at UConn with Rudy and I remember him as always having a smile on his face and being a genuinely nice guy.

I’m not arguing any of that. I’m saying exactly what you said, if he came back he’d have been a beast. Then he’d be remembered differently.
