Round 1 Friday games thread

This tourney feels like it's been a bunch of teases so far. A lot of 10-13 seeds have played close, but not quite. Santa Clara, Wright State, Hofstra, USF, Kennesaw. McNeese was pretty close for most of the game, too.
This is how it goes every year.

His pull has been flacid so far. He doesn't have one HS recruit signed yet - not a one. It's almost hard to believe. Hard to tell if it's the UK NIL structure or Pope.

This Jasper Johnson kid from OT Elite was supposed to be better than this.
He might not last long. UK fans are nuts, the crazies of men's college basketball. And not Cameron Crazy either, but legit freaking crazy in a scary kind of way, like stalker kind of crazy mindset.

Haha, I've been allowing myself to get teased by these upset potentials for 30 years. I do it to myself every freaking March. You'd think I'd learn after 3 decades, but nope!
I hear ya, I get teased for a split second then I reel myself back in saying ok I'm not expecting anything lol.

If Dan Hurley ever said something like this we'd have a 100 thinkpieces about how he's destroying the game of basketball, and probably a warrant for his arrest within 20 minutes

Haha, that's funny, so deadpan, it's perfect. Hurley has a similar demeanor on occasion, I think. He can have this dry wit sometimes, but then other times he's so full of expression.

.-.
Villanova is rolling now, from down 9 to up 10 in an 8-9 matchup.

And Miami OH having a tough time with the Vols’ SEC athletes.

Update: not so fast, ‘Nova ….

Today has been super chalk so far - results not disimilar to last year at this rate. I'm not saying Cinderella is dead yet, but it's close. I'll be surprised if any of em get past this weekend.

Nova had multiple possessions up 8-10 where they got stops but couldn't retain possession and Utah St scored, might comeback to haunt them

I don't know what Nova is doing right now. They were up 10 and looked like they could blow the game open and then they stopped grabbing defensive rebounds that were right there, unforced turnovers. Their energy has sucked since they went up 10.

Nova missing some makeable shots. Brennan missing that layup could be a turning point.

Utah State has a really good offense. They are cutting behind the help defense and getting some really high quality shots.

.-.
Isn't that El Amin on Utah St? Khalid son?
He is 6 ' 9" ? That's a foot taller than Khalid.

Nova making their threes and missing layups. Brennan missed at least two easy layups.

Both teams play great offense. Villanova has to finish better. Use the bank on the close shots if they are contested.

The people who think it would be a good idea to expand the tournament are out of their minds. There have been, what, four or five competitive games so far? Never mind upsets, the sheer number of blowouts should be a wake-up call that 64 teams is at least optimal and arguably too many in the NIL era.

One change that would amuse me - and probably only me - is for the committee to select 64 teams and then randomly draw opponents to start the tournament. So if for example Duke winds up playing Arizona in the first round, so be it. Also, first round game sites would be at the campus of the team that wins a coin flip. Same for the second round, with two days of travel time built in. The same procedures would apply for the Round of 32/16/8/4. The only game with a predetermined site would be the Championship.

I would also toy with the idea of allowing surviving teams to poach players from eliminated teams with the caveat that the acquiring team would need to keep that player on their roster the entirety of the following season, unless the player has exhausted eligibility. And if the player decides to transfer, you lose the scholarship/roster spot for that season.

MAXIMUM Chaos.

Willard's tournament struggles continue. Their season ended when Matt Hodge went down but they fell apart in this game. That's a game they should've won.
