Roster for circa '89-'90 type full court press?

I actually think we have the athletes to do this style of basketball, but maybe not defensive specialist that team had. Tate George, Scott Burrell and Dove were some of the best defenders we have had....but I think it was done more out of necessity that year, and it just happen to work magically, you cannot always replicate that.

Our guards are a little short to play too much full court press. It is too easy to pass over the top of them, break the press and give up easy buckets. The shortest player you mentioned (George) was 6'4" and we don't have anyone as athletic as Burrell. It doesn't mean we can't do it, just not for long stretches.

We have the speed and roster composition, with an athletic and skilled 4 and a rim-protector at the 5, but not the size at the guard positions. Our pressing teams had tall guards -- think Ollie and Sheffer, both 6'4+. Bazz and Boat are both sub-6'.

In future years it might be possible with the likes of Samuel, Cassell, Purvis, Ali, who have prototypical size for the 1/2 positions.

These guys have it right chap…….easy to throw over our guards so in turn way too many easy baskets…….may work against some teams still though. You may see some sort of press at times vs Cincy, they had trouble when LVille turned it up for sure!

Very good point on guard height...I think there is definitely a reason why Ollie seems to be looking for the bigger guards, I am sure he would take bazz any day of the week, but I think he is definitely going to be pressing more in the future.

That team could defend .
They started games with such intensity the other team had trouble getting into the game.
I thought with Giffey off the bench we would have a secondary intensity that could make this team special.

Next year's team will likely be more effective, but you do not see teams having a lot of success with the 40 minutes of he11 strategy much any more. Louisville and VCU (two of the most successful pressing teams in recent memory) have not be nearly as effective when hand checking, body bumps and arm bars are not allowed.

Length and athleticism is key to a press. Our guards are too small and we're actually not as athletic as you think. Boat is probably our best all around athlete but he's too short and we've seen him get beat off the dribble all season. Kromah and Facey fit the long/athletic pressing type, Giff fits the Nadav sorta mold, but guys Bazz, DD, and Omar are actually not that athletic. DD, while he can fill a break and jump in motion, has a slow first step and lacks explosive quickness.

Plus, I feel like pressing was very 90s. Good teams carve up presses so there are very few teams who even attempt it even more.
