Active Army '73-'76. Spent a couple summers TDY to Camp Buckner as summer support for West Point.
All my active time was as a mechanic assigned to Ft Meade.
Army Reserve part of '78 - mostly a truck driver
VT & NY Army Guard for a big chunk of the 80s. Changed direction to Mountain Infantry/OCS
Enjoyed pretty much all of it, some very interesting experiences.
Made it through Ranger School in '84 as an 'ancient' 29 yr old butter bar. (Took me two attempts, but got it done)

Birmingham, Al is the home of the nation's oldest Veteran's Day parade. It was not held last year, but is back this year with a nice turnout in spite of some wet weather. Salute to all who serve.

ROTC 1961. Originally scheduled for just six months at Ft Gordon, GA. Extended one year and sent to the Pentagon to work with the group that was responsible for purchasing all of the personal, vehicular, and helicopter radios for the Army. Thank you to all who served under fire and in hot spots around the world

Army, 74-77. Ft Knox, Ft Gordon, Furth & Worms Germany. Ft Benjamin Harrison.

Planed to retire as a lifer. Re-enlisted for 6 years while in Furth. Our unit was dissolved and everyone was reassigned. My pay record got fried. Not getting paid for the last 11 months was more than I could deal with and got out.

Was a nice check we got after being out for about 6 months.

During my cruises to southeast asia we parked there six times for about a week each time. It was awful, we hated every minute of it. :D;)
We visited Hawaii in July. It still sucks, a really terrible place to vacation. It was our 6th trip and it just keeps getting worse. ;)

Infantry, 101st Airborne Division, Vietnam 1969-1970

Most likely, America's last conscript army. We were considered expendable and easily replaced. If we lost 30 KIA but 100 enemy died, that was considered a victory by our senior commanders. Not much different from the Civil War, through WWI, WWII and Korea.

Thankfully, the all-volunteer armed forces has forced a change of that attitude.

USMA Band at West Point 1962-65

Along with the cream of American wind and brass players
many who went on to important careers in the orchestras of LA,
Chicago, New Orleans, St. Louis, MET, New Zealand...

An amazing time wih amazing colleagues
How I ever was a part of that, I'll never know.
Like Maestro, I was also in the West Point Band, but from 1967-70. My colleagues in the trombone section went on to play in the NY Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera, Detroit, Dallas and Virginia Symphonies, while another had to leave the Vienna Philharmonic when he was drafted. Arguably the greatest trombone section in military band history.

USAF - Security Police 1966-1970 Phu Cat, Vietnam March 1968 - 1969
I was at Phu Cat until summer of 1969 until I was "deported" to a hospital in Japan via NhaTrang and Cam Rhan . Worked on C7-Carbous , F100, F4cs and occasional stray F101 Voodoo that accidently landed there. Did C130 s at Langley and F100s at Myrtle Beach AFB SC. Avionics tech.
