I don't know the background, but now that you mention Stanley, I wonder if that was it. When the investigation came down in 2009, Gottfried said, "Yeah, well, it's all good for the people who cheat and who are later spanked lightly on the hand, but what about the people they play by using unfair advantages? Part of my firing at Alabama was from losing big games to teams like UConn."
He was referring to the loss in 2004. That loss apparently established a perception about him and his program.
I remember the week before the 2011 final four, Gottfried and Dino Gaudio were the main analysts on ESPNU. Watching those guys, you would've thought that that Kentucky team was the 96 Bulls and we were the 2012 Bobcats. That made the semifinal win even sweeter.
