What a life she had. How much love and pride she held for Geno.

I mentioned her last week when it was reported that Geno would miss Wednesday's practice (he arrived late) because he was in Philadelphia for a family matter. My first thought was that I hoped Marsiella was okay. Sounds like she died Thursday.

Having had immigrant grandparents, I can imagine Geno's Mom probably thinking (and maybe saying), "Geno, how come you don't have a real job?"
But I'm certain she soon understood and must have enjoyed seeing his success and lamenting his Dad wasn't around to see it.

I remember that too- "don't you yell at Svetlana, she's here all by herself" or words to that effect.

I think I read somewhere that Svetlana was Marsiella's favorite player.

The way I remember the Svetlana story is that Geno was grousing to his mom about "damn foreigners" ( specifically meaning Sveta), and his mom reminded him that "Geno, you are a damn foreigner!"

Marsiella Auriemma and her husband, Donato, immigrated in 1961 to Norristown, Pa. from Montella, Italy, a small village south of Naples. The Auriemmas brought three children — Geno, Anna and Ferruccio — and one suitcase.

"One of the great highlights of my life came at my own wedding. Geno and Kathy were kind enough to come to the reception. My grandmother saw him and shrieked in broken English, “It’s a Geno! It’s a Geno!” I still have a picture of them from that day."
