I loved the "Rockford Files," too; and he was my favorite character (Hendley, "The Scrounger") in The Great Escape, one of my favorite movies of all time.
He was really before my time, but I can remember his voice from my childhood when my dad used to watch his stuff. Great voice, up there with my favorites James Earl Jones and Morgan Freeman.
He earned two purple hearts while serving as part of the 5th Regimental combat team in Korea...he served as "the scrounger" for his unit there as well.
RIP Cpl Garner, 5th RCT. Unlike the Hollywood losers today, he put his life on the line. How 'bought that Tommy Mapother? Johnny Travolta? The rest of the twits in LA?
For those who remember Maverick. The ultimate anti-hero
He was fond of quoting his father.
A typical quote would be
"As my old Pappy use to say ,work is okay for a little while but it's certainly no way to make a living"
I have no idea how I remembered that.
My uncle played golf with him at a pro am in California. He was a pretty good golfer and a good guy. Loved the old maverick series when I was a kid. His old pappy told him never draw to an inside straight. "....Maverick is a legend of the West."
RIP James Garner.
Being a retired man of leisure, I occasionally flip thru the TV to see what old series/movies may be playing. A couple of weeks ago I caught a couple of episodes of Maverick as well as the flick "Support Your Local Gunfighter". I forgot how entertaining the Maverick series was and how charismatic James Garner was as an actor. RIP. Jimmy.
