RIP David Johansen | The Boneyard

RIP David Johansen

The leader and last surviving member of the New York Dolls. AKA Buster Poindexter.

Given that he died of brain cancer, I believe this is the appropriate tribute:

Fangirled out over him waiting for a table for brunch at Prune (RIP) in the East Village probably a decade ago. RIP to a legend of a bygone era.

If it weren't for the fact that I was confused, clueless, and didn't appreciate it at the time, I might better brag about seeing the New York Dolls in Cambridge, MA in 1974. For all of my friends who only wish they'd seen the Dolls live, it's just as well.

Similarly, the open air of Shea Stadium sounded lousy when the triple bill in 1982 was Johansson, The Clash, and The Who.

I caught him at Cheney Hall a few years back with Hubert Sumlin, Levon Helm and and Jimmy Vivino. A modern supergroup. But his role in the racetrack classic "Let It Ride" can't be forgotten.

Wow, I totally forgot about that! One of my favorite movies!

I remember when I first saw Let It Ride I was surprised it wasn't a bigger hit. One of the funniest comedies of its time. Yet as good as Johansen was in that film, he's better known as the cab driver/ghost of Christmas past in Scrooged.

I might have to go find "Car 54 Where Are You?" to see just how bad it was.
