Not a bad basketball coach either. His 1973 Providence team had a shot until Marvin Barnes got hurt.

A true visionary. The first to see the benefits of a mega-conference. RIP.

Ironic that on the day Dave Gavitt dies we learn that one of the original members of the Big East (Syracuse) and a school that joined within a few years (Pitt) announce plans to leave the conference and join the ACC.

Here's Geno on Gavitt's death:

“Dave was a great man; a renaissance man who was at the forefront of all that was good in college basketball,’’ Auriemma said. “One reason I wanted to coach at UConn was so that I could be in Dave Gavitt’s league. Twenty-seven years later, I’m still not in his league and never will be. Without Dave there is no Big East and without the Big East there would never have been a UConn as we have come to know it. This is a sad, sad day.’’

Hope he didn't hear about the Syracuse/Pitt defections before he died.
R.I.P.
